Episode 5: The Throne of Awuzi kingdom
The group moved swiftly through the shadows, their footsteps quiet on the dusty ground. Olamma led the way, her knowledge of the tunnels guiding them deeper into the heart of Awuzi.
As they walked, Ezugwu's mind kept drifting back to Olamma's plan. It was risky, but it just might work. He glanced at her, his eyes searching for any hint of doubt. But Olamma's face was set, her jaw cliked in determination.
They reached the entrance to the palace tunnel, and Akakpo nodded at Olamma. "You're sure this is safe?"
Olamma smiled, a small, tight smile. "I've used it before. We'll be fine."
Nwafor frowned, but said nothing. Ezugwu knew he didn't trust Olamma, but he was loyal to Ezugwu, and that's all that mattered.
The group slipped into the tunnel, the darkness swallowing them whole. The air was thick with dust, and Ezugwu could hear the sound of scatters rustling in the shadows.
As they emerged into the palace courtyard, Ezugwu's eyes scanned the area. It was deserted, just as Olamma had promised.
But something was off. He couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking into a trap.
Suddenly, a figure dropped from the shadows, a blade glining in the moonlight. "Welcome, Ezugwu," the figure sneered. "I've been waiting."
Olamma stepped forward, her eyes flashing with anger. "You shouldn't have done that, Ifeanyi."
Ezugwu's heart skipped a beat. Ifeanyi was one of Alumona's most trusted men. What was he doing here?
The group drew their weapons, ready to fight. But Ezugwu knew they were outnumbered. They needed a new plan, fast.
Ezugwu's eyes locked onto Ifeanyi, his mind racing. The traitor's smirk told him everything he needed to know – they were walking into a trap.
"Ezugwu, you're surrounded," Ifeanyi taunted, his voice dripping with malice. "Alumona's men are everywhere. You have no chance."
Olamma stepped forward, her eyes flashing with anger. "You're a fool, Ifeanyi. You think Alumona will reward you for betraying Ezugwu?"
Ifeanyi's smile grew wider. "Oh, I'll get my reward. And you'll all be dead."
Nwafor growled, his sword at the ready. "Not if we have anything to say about it."
Ezugwu raised his hand, stopping Nwafor. "Wait." He turned to Ifeanyi. "What's Alumona offered you? Power? Wealth?"
Ifeanyi laughed. "You can't understand, Ezugwu. You're too noble. But I'll tell you this – Alumona will crush you, and I'll be the one to bring him your head."
Akakpo tensed, ready to strike. Ezugwu saw the glint in his eye and knew what was coming.
"No, Akakpo!" Ezugwu shouted, but it was too late.
Akakpo charged, his sword swinging. Ifeanyi dodged, but Akakpo's momentum sent him crashing into the wall.
The sound of clashing steel echoed through the courtyard as the two groups clashed. Ezugwu drew his sword, his eyes locked onto Ifeanyi.
"You should've stayed out of this, Ifeanyi," Ezugwu growled.
The battle raged on, the outcome far from certain.
Suddenly, a figure appeared on the palace walls, shouting, "Ezugwu! Look out!"
It was...
The figure on the palace walls shouted again, "Ezugwu, it's a trap! Alumona's men are everywhere!"
Ezugwu's eyes followed the voice, and his heart skipped a beat. It was Idu, his childhood friend and trusted ally.
"Idu, what's happening?" Ezugwu shouted back.
Idu's voice was frantic. "Alumona's got reinforcements coming! You need to get out of there, now!"
Ifeanyi laughed, his voice carrying above the din of battle. "Too late for that, Ezugwu. You're surrounded."
Ezugwu's mind was racing. They needed a way out, and fast. He spotted a narrow doorway on the far side of the courtyard, partially hidden by the shadows.
"Olamma, can you get us out through there?" he shouted, nodding towards the door.
Olamma followed his gaze and nodded. "I think so, but we'll have to fight our way through."
Ezugwu turned to his group. "Nwafor, Akakpo, cover our backs. Olamma, lead the way. Let's move!"
The group fought their way towards the doorway, with Ezugwu and Nwafor holding off Ifeanyi's men. As they reached the door, Olamma slipped inside, followed by Akakpo.
Ezugwu and Nwafor backed in, their swords flashing in the dim light. Ifeanyi charged, but Ezugwu was ready. Their swords clashed, the sound echoing through the courtyard.
Just as Ezugwu thought they were clear, a figure appeared in the doorway behind them. Alumona's voice sneered, "You're not going anywhere, Ezugwu."
Ezugwu's heart sank. It was going to be a long night...
The darkness seemed to close in around Ezugwu as Alumona's voice sneered, "You're not going anywhere, Ezugwu."
Ezugwu spun, his sword at the ready. "It's over, Alumona. Your men are falling, and you're next."
Alumona sneered, his eyes flashing with anger. "You think a few loyal fools can stop me? I'll crush you, Ezugwu, and take the throne for myself."
The two men clashed, their swords ringing out in the night air. Ezugwu's group fought alongside him, taking down Alumona's men one by one.
As the battle raged on, Ezugwu's skills proved too much for Alumona. He landed a blow, sending Alumona stumbling back.
"Yield, Alumona," Ezugwu growled, his sword at the usurper's throat.
Alumona's eyes flashed with rage, but he knew he was beaten. "Never," he spat, but his voice lacked conviction.
Ezugwu's sword pressed deeper. "Then face justice."
With a swift motion, Ezugwu ended Alumona's reign, striking him down. The usurper's men, seeing their leader fall, dropped their swords and fled.
The courtyard fell silent, the only sound the heavy breathing of the exhausted fighters. Ezugwu stood tall, his sword still soaked with Alumona's blood.
Olamma approached, a smile on her face. "It's over, Ezugwu. You've taken back what's yours."
Ezugwu nodded, his eyes scanning the courtyard. "We did it, together."
The group cheered, their voices echoing through the night. Ezugwu's people, hearing the news, began to stir, their voices joining the celebration.
