Dubai: The Indian rupee is dropping against the dirham-dollar, currently at 23.36 for one dirham against 23.29/23.30 yesterday. This is already the second lowest level so far in July. (Earlier this month, there was a brief period during a day when it was 23.38.)

If this trend continues, the rupee could slip back to below 23.4/23.5 levels – and that’s when it start to work in favour of UAE’s Indian expats with funds to transfer home.

High Dubai gold price is not stopping budget-focused jewellery buyers
During June and most of this month, the rupee had been holding up at 23.1-23.2 levels to a dirham, impacting on how much NRIs could get out of their remittances.

There were a couple of days in June when the rupee fell to 23.61 against the dirham, which was immediately after the start of the Israel-Iran conflict mid-June. But soon enough, the dollar dropped and which meant the rupee went back to 23.1/23.2 levels on the remittance side.

According to currency exchange house sources, there has been a drop in rupee remittances from the UAE during July. Part of the reason could be that many NRI residents are already on their summer breaks - but some have clearly delayed sending part of their remittances hoping for INR to come under pressure at some point in July.

Today, they are getting that.

"The rupee weakness could continue until a trade deal is hammered out between US and India," said Neelesh Gopalan, Treasury Manager at a Dubai remittance fintech. "The pressure could rise if President Trump targets more countries with higher tariffs if deals are not struck.

"Under these circumstances, dirham-rupee could be looking at 23.4/23.5, and possibly 23.6, if the trade deal gets delayed." (President Trump has marked 50% tariffs for Brazil and 35% for Canada, and more could be on the way.)

Watch the dollar - it's trending
The dollar's been having some good days, having been in the doldrums for the better part of the year since mid-January.

Currently, the dollar index is at 97.5, continuing a rally that's already taken it past a 2-week high. The dollar index measures where the dollar stands vis-a-vis multiple other currencies. The index had been trading at 96 levels in recent weeks.

It's the firming up past 97 that's been the trigger for the INR and other Asian currencies slipping today.

Dubai: As the July 16 ex*****on date of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya draws near, a wave of urgent appeals is sweeping across India — from political leaders to civil society — demanding immediate and decisive intervention from the Indian government to save her life.

On Thursday, Kerala Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan wrote to President Droupadi Murmu, urging high-level diplomatic action. “I earnestly appeal for your intervention in the case of Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old Indian nurse from Palakkad, who faces imminent ex*****on,” he wrote, calling the matter a grave humanitarian crisis, according to Indian media reports.

Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya accused of Yemeni citizen’s murder to be executed on July 16
The case gained renewed urgency after Samuel Jerome Bhaskaran, a Yemen-based social worker nominated by Nimisha’s mother to negotiate with the victim’s family, confirmed efforts are underway to secure a pardon through blood money (diyat). Speaking to India Today TV, Bhaskaran said, “The only option is to engage influential local leaders who can convince the family to accept the offer.”

Earlier intervention delayed ex*****on
He credited the Indian government’s earlier efforts — including a letter from former MoS for External Affairs Gen. V.K. Singh — for helping delay ex*****on thus far. Without that intervention, “she would have been executed a long, long time back,” he said.

Meanwhile, political pressure is mounting. CPI(M) MPs K. Radhakrishnan and John Brittas have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, respectively, pressing for diplomatic talks and immediate intervention. Brittas emphasized that the Save Nimisha Priya Action Council, a citizens’ campaign, is willing to cover the full cost of the diyat if a settlement can be reached.

Emotional toll
Radhakrishnan highlighted the emotional toll on the family: “Nimisha’s mother and family are in unbearable anguish. Their only hope lies in the Indian government’s timely action.”

Yemen’s legal system allows for a death sentence to be waived if the victim’s family accepts compensation. But the lack of formal diplomatic ties between India and Yemen’s Houthi-controlled government in Sanaa has made direct negotiations extremely difficult.

State-level support
In an emotional appeal on Wednesday, Mariamma Oommen Chandy, widow of late Kerala CM Oommen Chandy, met Governor Rajendra Arlekar along with her son, MLA Chandy Oommen, to seek urgent state-level support. Mariamma, recalling her husband’s early involvement in the case, pledged to continue his mission to save Nimisha.

The Supreme Court of India is scheduled to hear a petition on July 14 urging the Centre to activate diplomatic channels and halt the ex*****on.

Dubai: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the national flag carrier of Pakistan, holds a distinguished place in aviation history.

Established in 1954 after the nationalisation of Orient Airways (founded in 1946), PIA quickly rose as a trailblazer in South Asian and global aviation.

In its early years, PIA set several milestones that defined the aviation industry in Asia. It became the first Asian airline to operate jet aircraft by introducing the Boeing 707 in 1960, marking the beginning of the jet age in the region.

PIA privatisation gains momentum as four bidders cleared
Fastest flight

Two years later, in 1962, a PIA Boeing 720 set a world speed record for commercial airliners by flying non-stop from London to Karachi at an average speed of 582.98mph (938.21 km/h). The flight, piloted by Captain Abdullah Baig, completed the route in 6 hours, 43 minutes, and 51 seconds, a record for the fastest commercial flight between the two cities that remains unbroken to this day.

First international route

PIA was also a pioneer in international connectivity, launching its first overseas route to London in 1955 and becoming the first non-Communist airline to fly to China in 1964. Over time, it expanded its global footprint to over 100 destinations, including Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia. The airline even played a crucial role in helping establish Emirates Airlines in 1985.

Long haul flights

In 2004, PIA made aviation history again as the launch customer of the Boeing 777-200LR, a long-range wide-body aircraft designed for ultra-long-haul flights. The following year, in 2005, PIA operated the world’s first longest non-stop commercial flight at that time, flying from Hong Kong to London Heathrow, covering approximately 8,500 miles (13,700 kilometres) non-stop.

In-flight entertainment

In addition to these achievements, PIA was among the first airlines in the region to introduce in-flight entertainment systems, offering passengers a more comfortable and enjoyable travel experience long before such amenities became standard in South Asia.

Challenges

However, the airline’s journey has not been without challenges. Financial mismanagement, operational inefficiencies, and safety concerns have plagued PIA in recent decades.

The most significant setbacks came in 2020 when PIA faced bans from the European Union, the UK, and the US due to safety concerns and a pilot licensing scandal. These bans severely restricted its international operations.

Currently, PIA operates a diverse fleet of 32 aircraft, including Airbus A320s and Boeing 777 variants, serving hubs in Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore. Its routes include major regional cities such as Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, and Istanbul, with a long-haul flight to Toronto.

Up for sale

The Pakistani government has renewed efforts to privatise PIA as part of broader reforms aimed at improving efficiency and reducing the airline’s financial burden. Recently, the privatisation process cleared four qualified bidders who passed the initial vetting phase, signalling potential progress toward the airline’s long-awaited restructuring and modernisation.

Despite uncertainty, PIA’s historical achievements continue to inspire hope for its future revival.

Here are top 10 PIA records and services

Dubai: Travellers from the UAE planning to visit the United States will soon face an additional expense as new legislation mandates a "Visa Integrity Fee" for all nonimmigrant visa applicants. According to the text of H.R. 1, also known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," signed into law, this new fee will add a minimum of $250 to the cost of obtaining a US visa. Gulf News has reviewed the text available on the US Congress website.

Effective from fiscal year 2025, the law stipulates that the Secretary of Homeland Security will require the payment of this Visa Integrity Fee at the time of issuance of any nonimmigrant visa.

The initial fee amount for fiscal year 2025 will be the greater of $250 or an amount that the Secretary of Homeland Security might set through further regulations.

This new fee is in addition to any other fees already authorised by law for US visa applications. The standard fee for most nonimmigrant visas, including visitor visas, is $185.

US travel advisory for UAE: What it means for travellers
Applicants typically pay the fees during the visa application process. This fee is applicable for various visa types, including visitor visas for business or tourism (B1/B2 visas). The fee is non-refundable and nonimmigrant (MRV).

Not a one-time charge
Furthermore, the legislation outlines that the visa integrity fee fee will not be a one-time charge at the initial rate. Starting in fiscal year 2026, the Visa Integrity Fee will be subject to annual adjustments based on inflation, the bill has stated.

The increase will be calculated by taking the previous fiscal year's fee and adding the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers for July of the preceding year, rounded down to the nearest dollar.

Iran-Israel conflict: UAE travellers cancel trips to Europe, US on disruption fears
Potential reimbursement
Interestingly, the bill includes a provision for potential reimbursement of the fee. The Secretary of Homeland Security may provide a refund to a nonimmigrant visa holder after their visa expires if they demonstrate that they complied with all the conditions of their visa, including the prohibition of unauthorised employment.

Reimbursement may also be granted if the visa holder did not seek to extend their stay and departed the US within five days after their visa's validity period, or if they were granted an extension of their status or an adjustment to lawful permanent resident status during their stay.

All fees collected under this new mandate, except for those reimbursed, will be deposited into the general fund of the US Treasury. Notably, the legislation explicitly states that the Visa Integrity Fee cannot be waived or reduced under any circumstances.

This new regulation will likely impact a large number of individuals in the UAE who travel to the US for tourism, education, business, or work, adding a notable cost to their travel plans.

Since taking over the US Presidency, Donald Trump's administration has fully suspended all nonimmigrant and immigrant visa issuance to nationals of Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

It has also made it mandatory for visa applicants to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media accounts to ‘public’ to "facilitate vetting necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States under US law."

Dubai: After years of rising rents, UAE residents might finally be catching a break.

According to new data from Bayut and dubizzle, the first half of 2025 saw Dubai’s rental market enter a phase of much-needed stability — and in some cases, even declining prices, especially for high-end properties and select villa types.

With more than 72,000 new homes expected to enter the market this year, tenants now have greater choice and better flexibility, whether they’re looking to rent short-term or settle in for the long haul.

Where rents are rising, dropping
Affordable apartments still saw modest increases of around 7%, but some units in Bur Dubai and Deira actually got cheaper — dropping by up to 6.2%. In contrast, luxury apartments in prime areas like Dubai Marina and Downtown Dubai saw only small hikes or even price drops of up to 5%.

Where to buy property in UAE for under Dh1 million in 2025
When it comes to villas, affordable and mid-tier homes are still in demand, with rents rising up to 9% in popular areas like DAMAC Hills 2 and Mirdif. But the high-end villa segment tells a more mixed story — some 5-bed villas in Dubai Hills Estate saw prices surge by over 50%, while 4-bed luxury homes in several communities saw rents ease by 1–9%.

Most searched communities for long-term leases:

Apartments (affordable): Bur Dubai, Arjan

Apartments (mid-tier): JVC, Business Bay

Apartments (luxury): Dubai Marina, Downtown Dubai

Villas (affordable): DAMAC Hills 2, Mirdif

Villas (mid-tier): JVC, Al Furjan

Short-term rentals stay in demand
Dubai’s thriving short-term rental scene shows no signs of slowing. Tourists and residents alike continue to flock to daily and monthly rental options, especially in lifestyle-friendly hubs.

Top monthly rental areas:

Luxury apartments: Dubai Marina, Downtown, Meydan City – from Dh7,100 to Dh16,300 per month

Mid-tier apartments: JVC, Business Bay – as low as Dh4,600/month

Budget apartments: International City, Deira – from Dh3,000/month

Affordable villas: DAMAC Hills 2 – Dh12,900 to Dh15,700/month

Luxury villas: Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Hills Estate – up to Dh171,000/month

Top daily rental picks:

Luxury apartments: JBR, Downtown, Dubai Marina – Dh516 to Dh762/day

Luxury villas: Palm Jumeirah – Dh6,960/day (14.6% rise)

Mid-tier: Business Bay, JVC – Dh384 to Dh472/day

Budget: Bur Dubai, DSO – as low as Dh206/day

More UAE residents to start owning homes soon?
Haider Ali Khan, CEO of Bayut and dubizzle, believes the stabilising market is nudging renters to consider owning a home — especially with new initiatives like Dubai Land Department’s First-Time Home Buyer programme guiding the decision.

Abu Dhabi tests next-generation driverless vehicles
Masdar City has begun testing level 4 autonomous vehicles (AV) in the city, in partnership with smart mobility provider Solutions+, a Mubadala company.

The initiative, overseen by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), has involved the registration, testing and operational approval of autonomous vehicles, ensuring safety, compliance and alignment with Abu Dhabi’s broader vision for smart mobility.

Dubai to start driverless taxi trials with Uber, WeRide this year
The project demonstrates the emirate’s commitment to driving innovation and shaping the future through cutting-edge technology and underlines the role of Masdar City, a global hub for clean technology and home to the Smart Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) cluster, in further advancing autonomous transport.

Level 4 automation is a significant leap in AV technology as it enables the vehicle to operate entirely on its own within a specific geofenced zone. Masdar City is offering a real-world testbed for advanced sustainable mobility by inviting global manufacturers to test their level 4 AVs in its integrated urban ecosystem.
