Ousmane Sonko Becomes President of Pastef Unopposed in a Remarkable Display of Unity?
At the CICAD conference center this Saturday, everything was in place for a major political event: nearly 2,000 congress participants, 1,200 delegates, 28 foreign delegations, 350 accredited media outlets, an atmosphere comparable to a continental football final, and great anticipation over the election results.
However, much like a movie whose ending is known from the very beginning, Ousmane Sonko was elected President of Pastef-Les Patriotes with 100% of the votes.
The event resembled a grand political gathering where the outcome seemed certain even before voting began. Pastef's regulatory and ethics authorities stated that the process was transparent, inclusive, and democratic. All procedures were respected, all requirements fulfilled, and all mandates duly validated.
Yet one notable fact stood out: there was only one candidate in the race.
That candidate was none other than the party's founder, long-time leader, and most recognizable figure, Ousmane Sonko.
Across Pastef branches in Senegal and throughout the diaspora, members expressed overwhelming support for a single candidate. The party's 553 national branches and 36 recognized international branches all backed Sonko.
The result was so unanimous that it surprised even seasoned political observers.
While some may joke that the election was a contest between one candidate and the absence of any challengers, there is a deeper political reality behind the outcome.
Ousmane Sonko is one of the few Senegalese politicians who has built a political movement so closely identified with his personality and vision. Despite facing numerous political, judicial, and media challenges over the years, he has maintained strong support among his followers.
Sonko did not simply found Pastef; he became its symbol, defended its ideals, and transformed it into a political force capable of reaching the highest levels of government.
The congress at CICAD did not create a new leader.
Instead, it officially confirmed what many Pastef supporters had already accepted as political reality. The vote did not merely elect a leader—it cemented a powerful political symbol in Senegalese politics.
At this congress, Ousmane Sonko received more than just the title of party president. He also received a significant responsibility: proving that a former opposition leader can successfully govern and deliver results.
In politics, applause often comes first, but judgment always comes later.
And that is where the real challenge begins—demonstrating leadership through concrete results. Unlike party members, voters as a whole rarely agree unanimously.
