Internet users in the UAE reported major slowdowns this weekend, with Du and Etisalat customers struggling to load websites and apps.
Microsoft on Saturday night warned that a series of cable outages in the Red Sea had degraded internet usage in countries across the Middle East. Its Azure cloud services were affected.
The US tech giant didn't say how the cables were severed, but said services were being rerouted overnight.
“Undersea fibre cuts can take time to repair, as such we will continuously monitor, rebalance, and optimise routing to reduce customer impact in the meantime,” Microsoft said earlier.
The Red Sea is a vital hub for global internet traffic, but ongoing conflict in the region has made fixing damaged cables increasingly difficult.
