Pakistan arrived at Headingley without Babar Azam and left three days later with a defeat large enough to reopen almost every question about their Test team.

England won the first Test by an innings and 103 runs after bowling Pakistan out for 171 and 135. Joe Root's side needed only one innings, 409 runs and a little more than two effective days of cricket to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Rain removed more than four hours from the contest. Even with that interruption, Pakistan could not take the match beyond the afternoon session on day three.

Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue were the central figures. They took five wickets each in Pakistan's first innings, then returned to claim three apiece in the second. Robinson finished with match figures of 8 for 80 and Player of the Match honors. Tongue ended with 8 for 89.

Eleven years after his last professional appearance, Ronaldinho has landed in Italy carrying the kind of football ambition that sounds almost too romantic to survive the modern game.

He wants one more official match.

And, if the ball cooperates one final time, one more goal.

The 46-year-old Brazilian arrived in Romagna on Thursday ahead of a spectacular public presentation with Ravenna FC, the Serie C club where he is already part of the ownership project and has now been registered as a player.

Ronaldinho is expected to play at least one official league match for Ravenna during the 2026-27 season. The exact fixture has not yet been announced, an important distinction as excitement builds around one of the most unusual comeback stories in modern soccer.

For a player whose career was built around imagination, the final chapter could hardly be more appropriate.

England and Pakistan were supposed to provide the entertainment at Headingley.

For a few glorious seconds on day two, a man carrying four pints had other ideas.

With England sitting comfortably at 141 for two, Jordan Cox on 42 and Joe Root on 45, the television cameras drifted away from the cricket and found a supporter attempting one of the most dangerous journeys available at a British sporting venue: carrying a full round of drinks down a packed staircase.

Four pints went in.

Very little beer reached the bottom.

The tray tilted, the drinks collapsed into one another, and suddenly a routine trip from the bar had become one of the loudest off-field moments of the first England-Pakistan Test at Headingley.

Sky Sports captured the whole thing.

The unfortunate supporter was then shown on the big screen, where he responded with a resigned smile that suggested he already knew there was no recovering his anonymity.

The beer could be replaced.

The replay was forever.

A Headingley fan spilled four pints during the England-Pakistan Test, prompting laughter, TV commentary and a replacement round from Yorkshire.

Melbourne Victory face one of the most dangerous remaining outsiders in the Australia Cup 2026 when they travel to Leichhardt Oval to meet APIA Leichhardt in Wednesday night's quarterfinal.

Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle rebuild has its first win, and it came with just enough drama to remind everyone how much work still lies ahead.

Newcastle recovered from conceding inside four minutes to beat Valencia 2-1 at Mestalla and lift the Trofeo Naranja, with Yoane Wissa scoring twice after halftime.

The bigger concern came in the first half.

Anthony Elanga was stretchered off after a high challenge from José Luis Gayà, who was sent off. The initial sight looked worrying, but Jaissle later said the early medical assessment was encouraging and Elanga could potentially return to training next week.

There were other promising signs too.

Bazoumana Touré helped create the winner, several young players were trusted with meaningful minutes, and Newcastle showed the kind of quick vertical attacking football Jaissle may want to build around.

Still, this is only the beginning.

Newcastle are rebuilding after major departures, integrating young talent and adapting to a new coach with the Premier League opener against Liverpool approaching on August 23.

A preseason trophy will not answer every question.

But for Jaissle, a comeback win and encouraging news on Elanga is a pretty useful way to start.
