California could propose becoming an independent state in a vote in 2028. The proposal was approved by California Secretary of State Shirley Weber and is now in the voter signature phase.

Signature Gathering:- The proposal must collect 546,651 signatures to be placed on the 2028 election ballot.
Ballot Question: "Should California secede from the United States and become an independent state?" This question will be presented to the voters.
Voting Results:- If 50% of registered voters vote and 55% of voters vote "Yes", it will be considered a "vote of no confidence" in the United States and an expression of the will of the people of California.
Legal Binding:- The result of this poll will not be legally binding and the Federal Government is not bound to heed the claim.
