The site was excised from a working sheep farm.
It consists of 25 hectares of cleared and under worked paddocks. It slopes from its mid length highpoint to the north and south - both slopes having spectacular views. An established wind break of cyprus pines flanks the west boundary and provides a degree of protection from the prevailing south westerly winds which pummel the south slope, making it a less desirable location for a new house. In this part of Australia the southerly winds are cold. In fact the wind fundamentally dictated the design of this building. The north (sun) facing living pavilion and adjacent courtyard are protected in part by the re-shaped landscape immediately to their south and in part by a 30m x 30m operable loured parasol that hovers over both pavilion and courtyard.
The parasol protects the house offering both shelter from and deflection of the prevailing wind as well as
varying degrees of shade and direct sunlight depending on the time of day and year. More importantly the parasol acts as a place-maker, localizing and defining a precinct on a large site within which the essential requirements for habitation - shelter, protection, security - can comfortably occur. Simple steel
framed hay sheds, roofed but open on all sides, are dotted across the Australian countryside and their evocative silhouettes offer a romantic rationale for this Arcadian myth- house.

Notions of the frontier; of survival in a never-ending battle with Nature are close to the bone for many
Australians. In the outback any constructed shelter can mean the difference between life and death - shade from the intense heat, height above the flooding river so that these simple, often weather-ravaged structures assume a more profound meaning.

More complex still is the compelling analogy to an architecture whose functional programme is disconnected from its protective skin that occurs when hay bales are placed randomly under the roof.

AUSTRALIA - THE WORLD IN REVERDE

An Art Museum Embedded in the Landscape
For millennia fire and flood have shaped this landscape. Bundanon’s buildings and landscapes are designed for resilience and resistance, incorporating radical solutions to a changing climate with a net zero energy target and defendable against fire and flood.
The Art Museum and Collection Store, for the work of Australian artist Arthur Boyd, is resistant to fire. It is subterranean. Precious artworks are housed and exhibited in an underground building, which protects the works from diverse climate conditions and offers thermal stability in the form of the reinstated hill (which also maintains the setting for the Boyd Education Centre by Murcutt, Lewin and Lark), reducing the demand on mechanical systems.
By contrast the Bridge is resilient. Treated as flood infrastructure the architecture supports rather than impedes the overland flow and sporadic floodwaters below it. A 165-metre-long by a 9-metre-wide structure that at one end abuts the Art Museum within the sloping hillside, bridges the reinstated wet gully and accommodates 32 bedrooms, breezeways, creative learning, dining spaces and a public cafe.

Architecture For People By People

Published in

Centre Karibu is a surgical center and medical training center in Beni,a town in DR Congo’s North Kivu Province. center is founded by Belgian
humanitarian surgeon Dr. Reginald Moreels.
Centre Karibu will offer specialized surgical services and training in an area plagued by war and violence, deprived of humanitarian aid.

Realizing the project is a major achievement and a sign of hope in one of the most inaccessible parts of the world, providing high quality medical care for
millions of people.
www.unichair.africa

The design pays great attention to the well-being of the patients, and is conceived as a series of pavilions in a garden. Breaking up the project into a series of smaller buildings creates a pleasant environment on a human scale, with ample light and greenery flowing between the buildings. This modularity also builds in a large degree of flexibility and plausibility, essential to realize this type of projects. Contrary to most hospitals in the region, patients are not grouped in large dorms. The pavilions house 1-3 person rooms, offering more privacy and rest to the patients and preventing diseases to spread too easily.

A large communal garden provides respite in the shade and space for cooking, eating and washing.
An orchard with fruit trees contributes to the food supply for the center. Green space and vegetation is also crucial in the site’s water management, in addition to a large wadi that protects the site from flooding. A total of 50 trees The have already been planted, with more to come.
By placing the water tower on a central spot in the garden, the team could save some space by using the space below the tower as a kitchen for visitors and patients.

A striking roof structure provides natural ventilation and cooling, and eliminates the need to use AC. This is achieved by using a double roof structure consisting of a perforated concrete slab topped with steel roof.

Centre Karibu opened in june 2023.
