Seven workers lost their lives. Nine were injured. Now, a UAE billionaire is stepping in to help their families.
Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, chairman of Burjeel Holdings, has announced a Dh1 million support package for those affected by the Emirates Road crash, in which a workers' minibus collided with a stationary truck.The victims included workers from India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Six of the seven deceased were Indian nationals, three from Uttar Pradesh and three from Telangana — and one was Sri Lankan. Dr Shamsheer confirmed the support is not limited by nationality and extends to all affected individuals.
"These were workers who came here with hopes, responsibilities and dreams for their loved ones. No financial support can replace the lives lost, but we hope this assistance will bring some relief," he said.
Coordination is underway with the Indian Consulate in Dubai. Dubai Police investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Emirates isn't going anywhere, and it wants its rivals to know it.
Speaking to journalists in Berlin, Emirates President Tim Clark delivered a pointed message to European carriers that have been grabbing routes and capacity while Middle Eastern airlines have been forced to scale back due to regional conflict.
"My message to all of them- be careful what you wish for. We will be back very hard and fast," Clark said.
Emirates, along with Qatar Airways and Etihad, was forced to cut back operations following airspace closures that began at the end of February tied to the US-Israel-Iran conflict. European giants like Lufthansa have moved quickly to fill the gap, pushing more capacity into Asia.
Clark said it was "a little bit sad" watching airlines that spent decades failing to compete with Gulf carriers now taking opportunistic advantage of a temporary setback. Emirates, he made clear, has "no intention of cutting back, reducing, or anything else."
On the fleet side, Clark said the airline is in no rush to order the Airbus A350-1000 until engine improvements are made particularly given the challenging operating conditions in the Gulf during summer. He remains satisfied with the A350-900 but will eventually need a replacement for the out-of-production A380.
Clark, 76, also confirmed he has no plans to retire, saying he wants to see the airline through the current crisis.

The UAE's energy expansion ambitions are now pointing north, to Canada.
Abu Dhabi's ADNOC is exploring upstream and LNG investment opportunities in Canada through its international arm XRG, with senior executive Musabbeh Al Kaabi citing Canada's renewed focus on energy development as a key draw — remarks made at the Global Energy Show in Calgary.
ADNOC already has a foothold in Canada through Nova Chemicals, a portfolio company with operations in Alberta. XRG would deepen that presence considerably.
For the UAE, this is part of a broader strategy, use XRG to lock in long-term energy assets abroad while global energy markets remain in flux.
