The Poison Daughter by Sheila Masterson (Audiobook)- Book review

This book introduced me to a whole new level of WILDerness and had me gasping for air 🫪🥵🫪. And let me just say… this is definitely NOT going to be everyone’s cup of tea. The 🌶️ is feral, primitive, and unhinged, BUT if this is your vibe, you’re surely going to savor every bit of it. 😏

It was not an easy read. There were moments when I questioned why I should keep reading, but I really loved the narration. Anthony Palmini and Laura Horowitz did an amazing job, especially with the banters. The story also gets more interesting as it goes on.

The blurb: Harlow (FMC) has a poisoned kiss, and she is in an arranged marriage with Henry (MMC). He is immune to her poison. They’re both in their 30s, and their relationship is complicated. Her being completely open about finding ways to unalive him while he knows exactly what she’s planning. Both having the time of their life loathing each other. A toxic relationship like poison. Both of them are twisted, broken, and messy individuals, full of ego and pride, conflicted. Yet somehow they’re exactly right for each other. 😏

And I’m SO glad I didn’t give up on this because, despite its flaws, I ended up loving this book. It stirred up A LOT of emotions, especially anger and pity. By the end, though, it all made sense to me, and they found a way to heal and become better versions of themselves.

The revelation around Chapter 57 is the most memorable for me. It was so emotional.

So yeah… I ate up those last chapters so much that I needed more. There were none…🥹🥹

Highly recommend if you’re looking for a wild adventure 😉 with plot and drama.

I finished He Who Fights with Monsters 4 on audio.

*Contains spoilers.

This one felt like a 2.0 version of the series, with some family drama and a deeper look at mental health, especially the post-war effects. It did feel gloomier compared to the previous books, but I liked that. It also explains some of Jason’s behavior from the previous books and gives more context as to why he’s capable of certain things despite being a store manager.

There’s also quite a bit of politics and social commentary in this book, which I know won’t be for everyone. A few of the jokes felt like they crossed the line for me, but at the same time, I think that’s just part of Jason’s personality. He’s not perfect, and I like that the story allows him to make mistakes, face the consequences, and learn from them. I mean, who is perfect anyway?

And then there’s the ex-girlfriend… And the brother??? 😭 I don’t know where that whole situation is going, but that girl is a huge red flag, and the brother is such a backstabber.

Then that surprise in the middle of the book? My jaw DROPPED. I was not expecting that at all.

As for the audio, it definitely improved compared to the previous books. Since it’s narrated by one narrator and there are a lot of characters, some of the voices sound similar to previous characters. But the emotions and delivery are still spot on.

Overall, this felt like a setup for the next book, and I’m excited to see where the story goes from here.

I finally read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. (Book+Audio)

In the beginning, I found the characters unlikable. The narrator, Mrs. de Winter, is naive and has such a childish personality, while Maxim is basically a rich walking red flag. There’s also the age gap between them, and of course, there’s Rebecca, which I found intriguing.

As the story went on, though, I started to understand the characters more, and it quickly became a page-turner. The writing has this old-fashioned, almost cinematic quality to it. It felt like watching one of those classic movies with eerie music and dramatic sound effects playing in the background. It feels slightly unsettling, even when nothing particularly scary is happening.

I thought I had the story figured out and that it was going to be predictable, but I definitely was not expecting the last chapters.

I highly recommend listening to the audiobook narrated by Anna Massey. Her performance is great. Each character has a different voice, and she does a really good job showing their emotions. It made the story even more enjoyable to listen to.

I finished The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, Vol. 1 by Beth Brower

This didn’t grab me right away. The beginning is slow, but the humor kept me going, and some parts made me want to hug the MC for everything she’s dealing with. The writing has that classic, Jane‑Austen kind of vibe. Things get more interesting in the last few chapters, and it made me curious to see where the series goes next. Overall, this was a charming read and it’s a nice setup for the rest of the books.

What to expect:
• Family drama
• Starting over after losing someone you love
• Possible future love story 👀
• MC goes to church (so she might be Christian)
• MC loves to read 📚
