📚 The Wolf and the Crown of Blood by Elizabeth May - Book Review
(Book one in The Broken Accords series, an interconnected set of standalones. This review may contain minor spoilers.)
This book is said to be inspired by Beauty and the Beast and Eros and Psyche. The world is set long after a war between humans and gods. The gods here have wings and powerful abilities, and how humans once fought them is just one of the mysteries in this book.
That war ended centuries ago when both sides made an agreement that created the Shroud, a barrier separating the human world from the gods’ realm. But of course, wars leave wounds… and some wounds leave scars that never fade.
The book has multiple POV's but is more focus on 2 main characters.
*Bryony Devaliant
She is a sacrificial princess who gets unalived and is resurrected again and again from a very young age. To my understanding, her bloodline and her repeated sacrifices are what keep the Shroud in place. I would consider her one of those FMCs who grow stronger as the story goes on, with a strong‑willed personality that pushes through everything. She’s a fighter.
*Evander
He is known as “The Wolf,” and he absolutely earns that title in two very different "feral" ways. 😏 He’s a highly skilled assassin dangerous and feared (and 🥵). The kind of morally gray man we all fall for. But he’s also unexpectedly romantic in his own intense, protective yet supportive way. He is literally the definition of “touch her and everyone on earth will turn to ash.” And... he hates the Devaliant family…
One day something happen and Evander was set to unalive Bryony and that's when all the fun starts.
At the very beginning, I had a feeling I would love this book because of the writing style. It has that perfect mix of angst and poetic prose that makes everything feel deep and meaningful. I could vividly imagine the world. It's dark, heavy, and steeped in sadness and anger in a strangely beautiful way.
The romance delivers all the yearning and emotional agony you’d expect from a story determined to break your heart just a little (or not). It begins with a Beauty and the Beast feel, and halfway through it turns into an Eros and Psyche kind of story.
As for the spice, I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone. If that’s what you’re looking for, though, this book certainly delivers even more than you might expect. Some scenes reach Pepper X levels of intensity to me because these two characters seem to have their hormones permanently set to maximum. Their attraction and desire remain consistently heightened throughout the story. 😅😆And… the other characters aren’t far behind either. It’s a very high‑spice world, so yeah... you’ll be entertained for sure lol.
Overall, I love the world and the story, even though it’s pretty brutal and heavy. The banter made me laugh, and the romance feels like a love that survives against all odds. The characters, with their broken souls, are heartbreakingly beautiful. The only thing that held me back a little was the spice. It just went too far for my taste. But I’m sure many readers will absolutely enjoy it.
