THE DOWNFALL OF NIMBO
Part 5: The Sale of Ogbuagu
News of Ogbuagu’s abandonment spread far beyond Nimbo.
Among those who heard the story was a wealthy nobleman named Chief Nwora from a distant kingdom.
Chief Nwora was not an ordinary man.
He was rich, influential, and deeply interested in spiritual matters.
When he learned that the legendary guardian of Nimbo had been neglected, he became curious.
“If the stories are true,” he said, “then such a power should not be left to waste.”
After months of investigation, he arrived in Nimbo with gifts, servants, and bags of silver.
He requested a meeting with King Ezemuo.
The meeting lasted several days.
At first, the king refused to discuss the matter.
But Chief Nwora was patient.
Each day he increased his offer.
More silver.
More gold.
More cattle.
More land.
The amount became so enormous that many elders could hardly believe their ears.
Soon the discussion spread throughout the community.
Some elders opposed the idea.
Elder Nnaji stood before the council and warned them.
“You cannot sell the shield that protects your home.”
But others laughed.
“What shield?” they asked.
“The chief priest is dead.”
“The shrine is abandoned.”
“The deity no longer works.”
“Let us take the money.”
After several weeks of arguments, the king made his decision.
The deity would be sold.
The announcement shocked a few people but excited many others.
On the day Ogbuagu was removed from Nimbo, a strange wind blew across the community.
Dark clouds gathered overhead despite the clear season.
Birds flew from the sacred forest in large numbers.
Many elderly women wept openly.
Some claimed they heard distant cries coming from the direction of the shrine.
But nobody paid attention.
The people were too busy celebrating the wealth that had entered the community.
The money was shared among elders, youths, families, and village leaders.
For many days, there was feasting and celebration.
People praised the king for bringing prosperity.
Meanwhile, Ogbuagu was carried away to Chief Nwora’s kingdom.
As the deity disappeared beyond the horizon, Elder Nnaji sat beneath the ancient Udala tree and cried.
He knew something the others did not.
Nimbo had just sold more than a deity.
It had sold its protection.
