Injections are a fast, effective way to deliver medications, nutrients, and vaccines directly into the body—but not all injections are the same.

There are five main types.

- Intramuscular (IM) injections deliver medicine deep into muscle tissue, often used for vaccines and hormone treatments

- Subcutaneous (SC) injections are administered into the fat layer under the skin for slower absorption, like insulin or blood thinners;

- Iintravenous (IV) injections go directly into a vein for rapid effects

- Intradermal (ID) injections, given just under the skin’s surface, are often used for allergy tests or TB screenings.

The one that is missing in this image is intraosseous (IO). These injections are used in emergencies to inject drugs into the bone marrow when veins are inaccessible.

Each type has specific uses, benefits, and risks. While side effects like redness or mild pain at the injection site are common and usually temporary, more serious issues—such as infections, nerve damage, or allergic reactions—are rare but possible.

The type of injection used depends on how quickly the medication needs to act, the drug’s properties, and patient-specific factors. Whether in a hospital setting or at home, proper technique and medical oversight are essential to ensuring safe and effective treatment
