One minute I'm begging, "Please, just go to sleep," my patience hanging by a thread, my voice louder than I wanted it to be.

I'm touched out. I'm tired.
I just need a second to breathe.

Then they finally close their eyes, and it goes quiet.
But instead of relief, the guilt hits like a ton of bricks.

I sit there, staring at their tiny face,
watching their chest rise and fall,
wishing l'd been softer, calmer, better.

Whispering, "I'm sorry. I love you. I hope you know that."

Motherhood is such a twisted mix of exhaustion and love, one minute you're desperate for a break,
the next, you're drowning in guilt for even needing one.
