The Dunning–Kruger Effect is a cognitive bias where people with low ability in a domain overestimate their competence, while those with high ability tend to underestimate theirs. This paradox arises because the skills needed to perform well are often the same skills required to recognize one's own limitations. As individuals gain more experience, their confidence initially peaks ("Mount Stupid"), then drops sharply ("Valley of Despair") as they realize the complexity of the subject. With continued learning, their confidence gradually rises again on the "Slope of Enlightenment," aligning more accurately with their actual competence.
