As a result of the 44-day war led by Azerbaijan against the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) in 2020, the subsequent yearlong blockade, and a renewed military offensive, around 150,000 indigenous Armenians, creators and bearers of an ancient civilization, were forcibly displaced from their ancestral homeland in September 2023.
The Armenians of Artsakh left behind a cultural heritage created with their own hands and transmitted through millennia, as well as their most fundamental right to pray in their own houses of worship. Since the forced exodus of 2023, all traces of Armenian historical and cultural presence are being erased by a systematic policy of destruction.
