Our Story

In the early 1990s, former Soviet republics had few independent outlets for front-line filmmakers. We realized then that Armenia needed an organization like Bars Media: a space to tell honest stories.

Bars Media is now Armenia's largest independent documentary production company. We work with the region's most talented film professionals, producing in-depth, narrative-driven and human-focused stories.

Our home is in Armenia, but we have produced films around the world, including in Syria, Kenya, Russia, United States, Luxembourg and Democratic Republic of Congo. Our productions have been broadcast internationally on ARTE, PBS, YLE, NHK and Al Jazeera. And we are honored to have received global recognition for our films, including the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival prize for Best New Documentary Filmmaker. The animated photo is from our project in development Aurora’s Sunrise, which is a docu-animation about Armenian Genocide survivor Aurora Martikanyan.
