Backpacking to see Lone Eagle Peak 🏔️

This has to be one of the most unique mountains in Colorado. After backpacking through a winding forest path, past waterfalls and well-maintained creek crossings, you’ll finally get to Mirror Lake and its perfect reflection of Lone Eagle Peak. I kept wanting to call it the Lonely Mountain and referencing LOTR 😂

Here are all the details:
📍The trail starts at Monarch Lake Trailhead, just past Granby and about 2 hours from Denver. The parking lot fills early, so plan to arrive by 7am on weekends, or start in the late afternoon once day hikers come back down to the parking lot.

🎟️ Overnight backpacking permits are required from June 1 to Sept 15and must be booked in advance on recreation.gov (search “Indian Peaks Wilderness Permit”). Choose the Crater Lake Zone and double-check your entry/exit dates. You can also day hike it without any permits.

🥾We clocked in 8.82 miles / 2,579 ft of elevation gain on our hike in, adding an extra mile or so while we looked for a campsite. On the hike out, it was nearly all downhill and 7.68 miles making our grand total just over 16 miles.

🌩️ We had to wait out a thunderstorm + hail after getting to camp and it was a little scary so be sure you know how to stay safe during a storm. Always bring your waterproof gear and double check that your tent is waterproof.

I couldn’t have asked for a better crew to do this hike with! It was definitely challenging (especially with the weather conditions) and being able to laugh and keep each other in good spirits made it one of my favorite experiences ever 🥹🫶🏻

So THIS is Yosemite?! 🤯🏞️

Yosemite was one of those places that I’ve seen probably a million times on social media, but those photos pale in comparison to actually seeing it with my own eyes. Towering redwood trees. Waterfalls reminiscent of Iceland with rainbows appearing through the mist. Massive granite walls that beckon climbers from all over the world (we even saw Alex Honnold on El Cap). Ravens gliding in and out of frame.

It’s definitely one of the most popular and crowded national parks, which meant lots of early pre-dawn alarms and hiking well into the afternoon. We’d drive over an hour each way because finding a stay inside the park is super tricky and competitive. Sore legs and knees every night. But it was all worth it for some of the most incredible views.

I can’t wait to share more, but right now wanted to drop some of my favorite photos that we got during our trip! Stay tuned for a lil mini-guide and itinerary 🙂

Have you been to Yosemite?
