➡️ Kirk’s death has made the West’s free speech crisis impossible to ignore. Once the home of thinkers like John Stuart Mill and Voltaire, we are now at a place where freedom of speech is a lofty concept that may or may not exist depending on how we feel. Worse still, society seems comfortable with this new reality… Cancel culture is not the exclusive domain of the left. The right has shown it can wield it just as eagerly. Calling for the cancellation of someone who celebrates Kirk’s assassination is as much an attack on free expression as celebrating the death itself. Both reflect the same underlying problem: an absence of tolerance and respect for people’s rights to say things we may condemn… It is not free speech if you could lose your job, be expelled from school, or be mauled in the streets because of what you said. If speaking your mind means losing your livelihood and the end of your life as you know it, then no one is truly free to speak. Many will choose silence. Others will retreat into anonymity, where discourse becomes more radical, less humane, and devoid of accountability.

Conscription is robbing Finland’s hockey talent, to the delight of the army bureaucracy
On the ice, Mikko Rantanen has faced broken bones, slashing sticks, and playoff brawls. Off the ice, his toughest opponent turned out to be his own government. Finland’s conscription system has ensnared the NHL star in a legal and financial nightmare that reveals how little the country values its brightest athletes.

Politicians love to bask in the reflected glory of sporting triumphs. Few moments capture this better than the recent scene with Donald Trump, who, after handing Chelsea the Champions League trophy, lingered on stage unfazed, despite the frantic efforts of FIFA’s president to usher him away. However, the desire to steal the limelight is universal, and in Northern Europe, it is hockey players who are often forced to humanise the sordid politicians.

In 2011, after Finland’s ice hockey team won gold in Bratislava, a massive crowd flooded Helsinki’s Market Square to welcome the national heroes. The then-President Tarja Halonen couldn’t miss the chance to polish her image. Draped in a blue-and-white scarf, she was quick to congratulate the players personally. Similarly, her successor took every chance he could to present himself as a hockey aficionado, appearing as a patron for the 2023 World Championship. Even the current President, Alexander Stubb, just couldn’t resist the urge for some political marketing, inviting Finnish Florida Panthers players for dinner and a photo-op.

Amid all those PR moves, one could easily forget that it is the state that is the gravest danger to the careers of Finnish hockey players. Governmental intrusion into their lives regularly hits them with season interruptions as well as exorbitant fees, and at times manages to end or halt careers.

➡️ John Devlin's Position (Pro-Libertinism):

“if there’s one thing libertarians should stand for, zealously and unwaveringly, it’s self-ownership. Libertarianism is consent culture applied to everything, and at the core of this is a fundamental respect for each individual as the just owner of his/her body/person/being. And I see no reason why this commitment shouldn’t be pursued just as earnestly in the social sphere as in the political one. We should be calling people out every time they disrespect body autonomy... And when a person chooses to live out their wildest, most decadent, degenerate dreams without hurting anybody else, we should raise our glasses to them, and we shouldn’t stop until self-ownership as a concept is more ingrained within the wider culture than any of the collectivist ideas that damage it.”

Ogechukwu Egwuatu's Position (Anti-Libertinism):

“Embracing libertinism is a threat to the libertarian movement’s success. Culture is dynamic and it is good that overly puritanical standards are fading. But at their core, traditions serve to preserve the fabric of society. A good example is how traditional family values are key to raising well-rounded adults. Presenting libertarianism as a movement that seeks to overturn everything society sees as moral and normal is to present it as a threat to society itself. The only likely response is strong resistance and backlash... Whether we are talking about free markets, limited government, or ending the drug war, none of these causes can be furthered if the whole movement is seen as extreme, and a threat to society."

"Scary? I’m not scared this Halloween. For the first time in as long as I can remember, I can sleep safe and sound on October 31st, without worrying about any ghouls or fiends lurking in the shadows."

"The UK banned ninja swords this year, so my village no longer needs to worry about attacks from samurai assassins."

John Devlin and the Speak Freely team share their fears this Halloween, you can find the article in comments.

The Halloween season is back, yet the most frightening presence remains the State, master of the world’s most elaborate trick-or-treat scheme: taxation. Frankly, it deserves a Javier Milei-style Texas Chainsaw Massacre in its next fiscal budget.

This fall, enjoy a series of short pieces from our editorial team on the spookiest things the State does — along with a selection of specially curated Halloween-themed articles from SpeakFreely Magazine.

➡️ In the following days here in Greece we are celebrating the Ohi Day. Ohi Day was the moment that Metaxas did not let Mussolini’s Italy intimidate or force Greece into submission.

On October 28, 1940, the Italian ambassador delivered an ultimatum to Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas, demanding that Axis forces be allowed to enter and occupy strategic locations in Greece. Metaxas famously responded with a firm “Ohi” (“No”), refusing to surrender Greek sovereignty. This courageous rejection marked Greece’s entry into World War II, as the country immediately mobilized to defend itself against the Italian invasion. Ohi day since became a national day because Greece basically won and even counter attacked the Italian state by liberating central and south Albania.

While libertarianism often emphasizes individual rights, Ohi Day demonstrates how a collective act can powerfully affirm those very rights. The 'No' was not just a governmental decision; it was a reflection of the overwhelming will of the Greek people to live freely. This collective resolve to resist external authoritarian control can be seen as a large-scale manifestation of individual liberty. However, the dilemma starts when we are speaking about a collective action in my eyes.
