Some Roman monuments were held together by something their visitors were never meant to see.
Hidden inside the stone were pieces of iron.
Roman stonemasons cut precisely shaped sockets into neighboring blocks and inserted metal clamps or dowels between them.
Then, in many cases, molten lead was poured around the iron where it entered the stone.
Once everything disappeared beneath the next course of masonry, the connection became invisible.
Stone carried the enormous compressive weight.
The concealed iron helped prevent adjoining blocks from shifting apart.
And the surrounding lead helped seat and isolate the iron inside its socket.
By the late Roman Republic and Imperial period, such hidden connections appeared in important monumental construction using marble, travertine, and other large cut stones.
One early Roman example survives in the Temple of Castor in the Roman Forum, where iron clamps were already being used shortly after 117 BC.
Yet many of the original metal fittings are gone today.
Iron, bronze, and lead were valuable.
As Roman monuments were dismantled and recycled in later centuries, workers often extracted their metal for reuse.
What remained were empty channels and strangely shaped cavities carved into ancient blocks.
To an untrained eye, they can look like damage.
To an archaeologist, they can reveal exactly how pieces of a vanished building were once joined.
Rome’s architecture was never simply stone stacked upon stone.
Some of its greatest engineering was designed to disappear inside the monument itself
