August Was a Month of Extremes! Here’s what hit our YouTube channel this month:

🐻‍❄️ How Polar Bears Dominate Arctic Wildlife*

Welcome to the Ice Edge, way above the tree line, where Polar Bears roam. This is Canada at it’s most extreme. Huge sheets of ice are the barriers between life and death, and in this documentary you’ll learn how different wildlife is adapted to live in one of the harshest climates in the world!

🐋 What It Takes to Film Humpback Whales

On the Coast of Newfoundland, two filmmaking crews have arrived to film a once in a year spectacle: Humpback Whales feeding right on the coast. With a crew on boats, and a diving crew beneath the waves, they’ll have to face environmental challenges to capture stunning images of the whales at work. What else will they uncover on the sea floor?

🔥 Adapt or Die: Wildlife in Extreme Heat and Cold*

Temperature extremes across the planet control ecosystems, but many animals have learned tricks to endure! From tortoises surviving a forest fire, to Volcanic Birds that incubate their eggs with the earth’s warmth, wildlife finds a way to fit into the most surprising circumstances.

If you could give a lion a voice, what story would it tell? 🦁👑

In The Bastard King, we answer that very question. A lion cub born of an illegal union. Two warring Prides, and a realm on the brink of devastation. Change looms, and a divided species won’t survive what’s coming. What can The Bastard King do?

🎥 Shot over 10 years in Tanzania, The Bastard King combines documentary filmmaking with a shakespearian narrative. And we’re releasing it for free on our YouTube Channel this September!

“I probably won’t see the benefit of the work we’re doing here... but we like to think we’re creating a healthier, climate-resilient habitat for future generations.” - Shaila Rao, National Trust for Scotland 💚

In our 3-part Scotland series, we had the privilege of working alongside passionate conservationists who are restoring landscapes on a massive scale.

At Mar Lodge Estate in the Highlands, Shaila and her team are bringing peatlands back to life by slowing water flow, re-wetting the land, and turning these ecosystems into carbon-storing powerhouses.

They’re also planting mountain woodlands, a habitat once widespread in Scotland, now nearly gone. So far, they’ve planted over 9,000 willows to support biodiversity and build resilience for the future. 🌱

Projects like these remind us that real change takes time, and vision. And thanks to partners like the National Trust for Scotland, that vision is becoming a reality.

Nobody talks about seagrass…but maybe we should.
It doesn’t look glamorous. It doesn’t make headlines. But it’s one of the most important ecosystems on our planet, and it’s quietly working overtime to help our planet.

Here’s why seagrass deserves more love:
🌱 One hectare can support up to 80,000 fish and 100 million small invertebrates, including endangered species like seahorses and stalked jellyfish.
🌱 Seagrass absorbs carbon 35x more efficiently than tropical rainforests and locks it away in seabed sediments.
🌱 Its roots hold sediments in place, helping protect coastal communities from erosion.
🌱 It provides nurseries for commercial fish, supporting local economies and food security.
🌱 Seagrass filters nitrogen, reducing harmful algal blooms that affect marine and human health.
🌱 Healthy meadows mean sustainable livelihoods, eco-tourism, and a more balanced ocean.

In our Scotland project, we followed Will Goudy and the team at Seawilding in Scotland’s Loch Craignish, a place where one of the country’s most ambitious marine restoration efforts is taking root. Literally.

From hand-harvesting 125,000 seeds to planting 350,000 so far, this is a story of quiet, patient impact, community empowerment and a strong reminder that nature recovery takes teamwork, dedication, and time.

We’re proud to help tell stories like this. Stories that matter.

🌍Hot and Cold: Life at The Limits of our planet!🌋❄️

In the rainforests of Sumatra, orangutans begin their day foraging before retreating to shady nests as the midday heat sets in. Meanwhile, on the fiery slopes of Tavurvur volcano, birds gather to lay their eggs in the warmth of the ash, letting the Earth itself incubate their young.

❄️ Far to the north, in the frozen Yukon, a single flowing river defies the Arctic winter. Chum salmon travel thousands of kilometers to spawn here, attracting grizzlies that brave subzero temperatures to fatten up for the long winter ahead.

Filming Humpback Whales is no ordinary day on a documentary shoot! 🐋🎥

In this making-of video from Wild Canada – The Eternal Frontier, the crew sets out to film wildlife underwater in the icy waters off Newfoundland and the high Arctic. Using topside high-speed cameras and a team goes filming underwater led by legendary diver Didier Noirot, they faced fog, freezing temps, and murky waters filled with millions of capelin — the primary food of humpback whales.

Will they get the perfect conditions they need to film the whales? And what other secrets does the ocean floor hold for them?

We’re proud to be part of Wildscreen Festival 2025! 🐼

Since 1982, Wildscreen has been one of the best meeting points for the most exciting voices in natural world storytelling. And this year, we’re contributing in several ways:

🎬 Behind the scenes:
Josepha Müller-Hartburg, our Sustainability Manager, was part of the nomination jury for the Sustainability Award. Elisa Mourão-Fischer, our Digital Marketing Strategist, helped judge the Short Award category.

🎤On Stage:
Our CEO, Walter Koehler, will speak on the panel "The Impact of AI on Storytelling: how can we all remain accountable for the uses of AI in our productions?". This conversation couldn’t be more relevant, as AI is rapidly reshaping how stories about the natural world are created, shared, and trusted.

🏆 Recognition
We're also sponsoring the Scripted Narrative Award, with 3 outstanding nominees:

A Landscape Renews, but danger remains everywhere. ⛈️

New families struggle to survive in a rapidly changing ecosystem. Though the grass is green once more, changing weather patterns threaten the vulnerable young of the Maasai Mara. 🌍

In the Second Episode of Mara: Rebirth, we return to check in on the young families that have sprung up since the wildebeests left. In the wake of one of the world’s great migrations, these families have had a paradise to grow in. 🏞️

Lions, Giraffes, Leopards and more have all had a chance to raise their young, though not without competition.

The times are changing, and the distant beating of hooves can be felt through the Earth. This is a story about cycles, change, and endurance. How do these animals adapt to the extremes of the Mara?

Tomorrow, at 21:15 on @‌ServusTV we’re returning to the Maasai Mara for the conclusion of this monumental series. Catch the film as it premieres, and afterwards on ServusTV ON!

The Ice Edge - Wildlife of North Amercia’s Frozen Frontier ❄️🐻‍❄️

The Ice makes for a stark contrast to the other habitats of North America, and it’s a wonder that life is possible here at all.

But Polar Bears, Foxes, Seals, and even Ducks have found a way to make this hostile environment home. But they’re not alone. The Native Inuit people have mastered the landscape, finding the best ways to survive both above and below the ice.

How do Polar Bears manage to survive a barren wilderness? Why do ducks dive under the water?

Behind every smooth shot in our factual entertainment shows... there’s a camera operator in survival mode. 💪

Because getting the shot means:
📸 Filming while trotting on horseback
📸 Sprinting after joggers (yes, with gear)
📸 Standing in ponds, sitting on tables, balancing on... whatever works
No chairs? No problem.
No path? Make one.
No time? Run faster.

Massive shoutout to our unstoppable crew. You don’t just capture the action, you are the action. 🔥
