A group of junior doctors at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) has issued an ultimatum regarding the persistent delays in the payment of their salaries. Employed on May 1, 2025, as part of a two-year internship mandated by the Medical and Dental Council of The Gambia, the cohort of 59 recent graduates from the University of The Gambia has expressed growing frustration over the handling of their compensation.
Since their employment, the junior doctors have faced significant delays in receiving their salaries. They were paid for May on June 5, a week after other staff members, and for June on July 11, two weeks later than their colleagues. Despite numerous follow-ups with the Chief Medical Director (CMD) and the Ministry of Finance, the situation has not improved, leading to feelings of demotivation and frustration among the house officers.
In a letter addressed to relevant authorities, the cohort highlighted the challenges they face as the most junior members of the medical staff, responsible for patient care yet struggling with administrative hurdles. They emphasized that the houseman-ship is a critical step toward obtaining a medical license, yet they have been left in a state of uncertainty and frustration.
The doctors have stated that if their salaries remain unpaid while other staff members receive theirs for July, they will resort to industrial action, including a sit-at-home strike. They have already communicated this intention in a letter dated July 17, 2025, which has been signed by 51 members of their cohort.
The junior doctors are calling on the public and stakeholders to support their cause, urging the Gambian government to address their plight and honor their rights as employees. They argue that the current situation not only affects their financial stability but also has broader implications for the healthcare system in The Gambia, as it discourages young professionals from contributing to national development.

Fatal Fire At Sinchu Alagie Daara Claims Life of 12-Year-Old Student

A tragic fire at a Quranic school, locally known as Daara in Sinchu Alagie has claimed the life of a 12-year-old student and left another 11-year-old in critical condition. The incident occurred on Wednesday and both injured students were transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
The deceased, identified as Abubacarr Mbacke, succumbed to injuries sustained during the fire, while 11-year-old Muhammed Njie remains hospitalized at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in critical condition. Both students were among those affected by the blaze, which broke out in the dormitory of the school on Wednesday, July 6, 2025.
In the wake of the incident, the Police have detained the head of the Daara, Ebrima Hassan Cham, along with two teachers, Alagie Jobe and Omar Cham, as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire. Preliminary findings reveal that the two boys had previously escaped from the Daara and were returned by their parents. According to the police, reports indicate that, in an effort to prevent further absconding, the boys were allegedly chained and locked inside the dormitory where the fire erupted.
The Police are actively engaging with the Daara authorities to gather more information and establish the exact cause of the fire. In light of this tragic event, law enforcement officials are urging all educational institutions, particularly Daras, to implement stringent fire safety measures and prioritize the welfare and rights of the children entrusted to their care.
Ebrima Darboe, the former Communications Officer at the Child Protection Alliance, expressed his concern over the recent challenges faced by children in Daraas, including infections, fire outbreaks and unsuitable living conditions. He urged stakeholders to take immediate action to address these issues.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of young Abubacarr Mbacke and hopes for a swift recovery for Muhammed Njie. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the safety and treatment of children in Daraas.
