The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a strong warning against recent statements made by former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, who is currently in exile. The Authority deplores to Jammeh’s attempts to disturb the peace and security of The Gambia and warns that breaching the conditions of his asylum in Equatorial Guinea, as well as interfering with the peace and security of The Gambia and the wider region, will have consequences.
For several years, former President of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, has threatened to return to the country by force despite being in exile in Equatorial Guinea since 2017. His most recent statement came on 26 October 2025, when he once again declared his intention to return in November, prompting his supporters to hold rallies in preparation.

While his supporters welcomed the news with enthusiasm, many have condemned these declarations as a serious threat to The Gambia’s peace and stability, particularly given the violent nature of his former regime.

The Gambia has officially launched the Gambia Infrastructure Project (GIP), a US$52.6 million initiative funded by the World Bank aimed at strengthening the country’s infrastructure, expanding energy access, and building institutional capacity. The launch ceremony took place today, chaired by Mr. Baboucarr Jobe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, and attended by government ministers, development partners, World Bank representatives, civil servants, religious leaders, and members of the media.

Key highlights from the event include statements from several government officials emphasizing the project’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive development. The Minister of Public Service, speaking on behalf of the Minister of Finance, assured that GIP will be implemented under strong institutional oversight through the Central Project Coordination Unit (CPCU).

The Minister of Works outlined plans to upgrade roads, expand electricity access, and strengthen institutions to foster resilient and inclusive growth. The Minister of Petroleum highlighted specific goals such as improving electricity transmission, extending last-mile connectivity to 80 rural communities, and supporting renewable energy projects, including the 50MWp Solar PV Plant in Soma.

A World Bank Director attending the event stressed the importance of partnership, collaboration, and shared responsibility to ensure the project’s success.

The GIP is expected to directly benefit both urban and rural populations by improving connectivity and enhancing service delivery, marking a significant milestone in The Gambia’s path toward sustainable national development.
