Hormones, Gut Health, Biochemical Imbalances

This last step is where we bring it all together. Everything will start to fall into place 🌸

Once our hormones start to stabalise, blood sugar levels are being regulated & nutrient deficiencies are being corrected, we notice a huge improvement to our moods, our urges to pull & our overall sense of control.

You will feel calm, in control & less erratic in nature (emotionally, physically & mentally). You’ll have more energy & motivation to do the things you really want to do.

Nobody wants to be constantly thinking about this disorder & worrying about how many times you’ll pull today. Nobody wants to worry about covering bald patches & making sure people don’t notice.

Instead, you can worry about the important stuff, like going out with friends, physical activities that you love like swimming &/or team sports. You can start to think about a stress-free visit to the hairdresser or how you might start to style your hair now that you are seeing good hair regrowth.

This process is not overnight, but with a few small changes made consistently over the next few weeks, you will see massive improvements to your whole life.

Other Health Diagnoses:

I don’t just treat Trichotillomania symptoms 🤗

When it comes to Trich there is usually not just one thing causing the urges. Our body’s are intricate & complex.

You probably think that I only look at the nervous system & of course the gastrointestinal system. Yes, the nervous system is the network of nerves & cells that carry messages to our brain & controls our movements (including our urges to pull).

And yes!! I’m very interested in the gastrointestinal system as a Nutritionist that is a given 🤪

However, what most people don’t realise is that the nervous system is influenced by all the other body systems (cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, immune system…).

And when I am treating you, I am looking at ALL of them. I want to know about past & present medical conditions. I want to know how you are managing them & how it effects you & your urges to pull. I will then try to help you manage these better, in order to move forward in your Trich recovery.

I’ll give you an example. I have Hashimotos (an under active thyroid autoimmune disease). If, I do not manage my thyroid hormone levels & support good thyroid health through my food & lifestyle choices, I will see my moods, energy & anxiety increase. This will in turn exacerbate my urge to pull. So, I keep my thyroid health as a top priority as I know this can effect my mental health status as well as my overall health.

If you have another medical condition, are you managing it well? Could this medical condition be making your urges to pull worse?

Some of the most common conditions I see in my Trich clients are: iron deficiency anaemia, diabetes, thyroid issues, PCOS, endometriosis, depression, anxiety, pyrrole disorder & IBS.

Analysing your blood test results can give me A LOT of insight into what your underlying root causes for pulling are.

❌ I don’t read a blood test like a doctor.

❌ I’m not looking to diagnose you and get you on a pharmaceutical.

❌ I’m not using reference ranges set by the labs using data from the sick population.

✅ I’m looking at your results holistically & working out the links to each body system. Example - if cholesterol is low, then that might be why your Vit D is low at the end Summer.

✅ I’m looking for deficiencies & imbalances that are the root causes for all of your symptoms. I’m putting a jigsaw together 🧩

✅ I’m using optimal ranges. Your doctor says ferritin is in fine when in range at 17ng/mL. The range is 16-154ng/mL. Do you think that’s optimal? 😱

This is when I work out which imbalances are exacerbating your urges to pull. Which nutrient deficiencies are keeping you stuck in this never-ending Trich cycle 🌸

You have probably heard me bang on about biochemical imbalances & nutrient deficiencies before. Blood tests are how I get confirmation about which deficiencies and imbalances we need to treat.

You see, a lot of your current symptoms and your diet can tell me a lot about what is already going on. I usually have a pretty big hunch about whether there's an iron deficiency or a methylation issue, or a nutrient absorption issue after our first session.

Your moods, how you sleep, your food cravings, your bowel movements, your bloated belly after certain foods & your hair pulling urges can tell me a lot about what is going on.

It's all a big puzzle that I piece together throughout all of our nutrition consultations.

Blood test are an important piece of this puzzle.

One of the main pieces of information that I get from your pathology results are how significant the deficiencies are. This will guide me on how big the dose needs to be to get you back in balance sooner and in the safest possible way.

Because sometimes with nutrients you can go too hard and too fast and the supplement may have the opposite effect you want it to have or it might go too far over and then you'll end up with more issues or actually make your Trich symptoms worse.

I want to be able prescribe supplements with precision. Get you back in balance the quickest, but most safest way possible.

So, blood testing and closely analysing your results are a crucial step in your Trich recovery.

Make some diet changes:

Don’t worry this step isn’t as scary as it seems…. 🤗

I like to take dietary changes slow 🐌 Get you used to how it feels to make small changes. After you’ve mastered one, then we can move to another.

I also ensure that these changes fit your lifestyle. I’m not going to suggest some elaborate breakfast that takes 30min to cook. I’m going to suggest adding some nutritious ingredients to your staple meals.

I may suggest drinking 2 glasses of water upon waking to help increase your water intake.

I may suggest ditching white bread for a more wholegrain/seeded bread.

I may suggest some protein-rich snacks to eat between meals instead of a packet of chips.

My suggestions will depend on you. I make this treatment for you. All of my dietary & lifestyle recommendations are specifically for you and your individual needs.

I’m not going to make you eat a cup of Brussel sprouts each day, if that is not your thing (it’s probably not anybody’s thing) 🤪 Even if I said to do it and you do it for a while, it’s not going to work long term because you’ll soon get sick of it. I want long term sustainable changes for you.

I want to find dietary solutions that fit your day-to-day life. I want to get you eating as many different nutrients as possible, as many different colours as possible . I will work with you and your tastebuds to find a way that works for you.

This step is all about upping your nutrition game & making sure we’re eliminating any trigger foods as much as we can.

After making a few of these dietary changes, you may already see a reduction in pulling. You may be surprised how much nutrition & the food you eat can effect mental health & our symptoms of Trich.

Nutrients make our body work. Every intricate cell needs water & nutrients to work properly. It’s about feeding these cells & getting them to work for us the way they should be.

Analyse Diet & Current Lifestyle

The first step on your Trich recovery with us entails a close analysis of your current diet. Don’t worry it’s not as scary as it sounds 😬

We’ll ask you questions like how many serves of red meat, white meat, fish & vegetarian meals you are having each week. We’ll ask you what a typical breakfast is for you? How much water you are drinking? How much coffee, tea & alcohol you’re drinking too.

What time of the day you are eating & how this correlates with your pulling?

What cravings you are having? Sweet or salty and at what time of the day? This can tell me about possible nutrient deficiencies that could be exacerbating urges to pull.

We’ll ask about your usual breakfast, lunch & dinner meals and how many fruits & veggies are included.

We’ll also ask if there are any symptoms such as bloating, flatulence, nausea, rashes or snuffly nose after eating certain foods or at particular times throughout the day.

By asking all of these questions & more I can get a clear picture of any food triggers &/or intolerances that may be worsening your current urges to pull.

We’re looking for clues as to what might be the underlying biochemical imbalances that are keeping you stuck in this never ending cycle of pulling 🔎

The good news is, you can start today. Some of these food triggers you may be able to work out for yourself. Start a food diary and see if there are any correlations between food and your pulling.

For me, I used to notice that if I had a coffee without food in the morning, I would feel racy and reach for my hair more. I would also notice after eating heavy carb meals and sugary foods that I would get more urges to pull. And following a day after a few alcoholic drinks I could pretty much guarantee my pulling would be out of control 🤯
