$20 billion a year!

That’s how much we lose on tax breaks for property investors.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of Australians are waiting for public housing, rents are skyrocketing, and homelessness is rising.

These so-called “incentives” don’t build new homes, they just line the pockets of wealthy investors, with the top 20% of earners pocketing over half of all negative gearing deductions.

If the government ended these subsidies, we could reinvest that $20 billion into building and fixing public housing, tackling both the housing and poverty crises head-on.

The Albanese government must choose.

Will they keep rewarding property investors, or will they invest in homes for people who need them most?

The time to act is now. If not now, when?

As a reminder for ...

When travelling overseas:

1. Do regular digital spring cleaning. Review your apps, messages, files, and photos. Be especially ruthless with sensitive content. If you don’t need it, don’t keep it.

2. Keep your operating system up to date. Regular updates make your device harder to compromise.
Those persistent update notifications can make a real difference to your security.

3. Enable strong encryption and passwords. Use long, unique passcodes on all devices (alphanumeric is best).
This is your first line of defence.

4. Use secure messaging apps. Platforms like Signal offer end-to-end encryption.
Standard texts offer almost no protection.

5. Use browsers instead of dedicated apps. Access email or social platforms through browsers and log out after use.
This creates less persistent data.

6. Consider using online aliases. Avoid using your real name and personal details where possible.

7. Back up and minimize data. Save your data to encrypted cloud storage. Travel only with what you need.

8. Temporarily disable biometric unlock. Turn off fingerprint and facial recognition before travel.

9. Power off devices before crossing. Powered-off devices have additional encryption protection in many cases.

Together with Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA The South Australian union movement stands for peace and solidarity, and we are horrified by the humanitarian catastrophe facing Palestinians in Gaza. The use of starvation as a weapon of war is a profound violation of international law, and we condemn the Israeli government’s blockade of essential humanitarian aid. We also continue to call for the immediate release of all remaining Israeli hostages. Australian workers demand that our government takes a stand to ensure a just and lasting peace.

Join us in urging the Australian Government to use its influence to secure a permanent ceasefire, end military trade with Israel, and immediately allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. We support international efforts to prosecute violations of law and work towards a two-state solution that includes recognising Palestine as a sovereign state. Stand with us in solidarity and sign our petition today to demand action.
