🎛️ Advanced Lathe Cutting Workshop – Berlin 🎛️

While in Berlin, I had the privilege of attending Helmut Erler’s advanced lathe cutting workshop at Lathesville.

The sessions went deep into the inner workings of cutting amplifiers, amp and cutting head calibration, and sparked great discussions around the craft of cutting master discs.

For me, it was incredibly valuable to be surrounded by so many highly experienced master disc cutters — sharing knowledge, techniques, and perspectives that can only come from years behind the lathe. I walked away not only with new skills but also with connections that have already proven beneficial, plus some great new friendships.

Meeting Helmut (Lathesville / Tokyo Dawn) and Flo from Flokason was a real highlight. I’m very grateful to have had this opportunity as part of my preparation for launching Analog Dreams. 💛

🎙️ Visit to Neumann Berlin 🎙️

While in Germany earlier this year, we had the privilege of being invited to Neumann’s headquarters in Berlin after they discovered we’re restoring an AM32 lathe. The team was genuinely excited about the project, and it was a real honour to be welcomed inside.

We toured their HQ and saw an incredible collection of vintage microphones, their repair and R&D workshops, and even stepped into their anechoic chamber — a surreal and unusual experience.

The highlight was a rare glimpse in the basement at Neumann’s prototype CD Audio Master lathe — a pivotal piece in the history of physical media’s evolution. It’s rarely seen and never photographed, making the moment even more special.

A huge thank you to Neumann for the hospitality, the tour, and the support for Analog Dreams. We hope to return soon — next time with photos of our fully restored AM32 lathe. 💛

Earlier this year, our Pheenix AD12 and Newbilt presses touched down in South Australia and were carefully unloaded from the shipping container.

After their long journey, both presses have been placed safely into storage while we continue the search for the right industrial site to bring Analog Dreams to life.

We want to share this journey as it unfolds — from unloading the machines, to building out the plant, to eventually pressing records for artists across Australia. We hope seeing the process from the ground up gets you as excited as we are. 💛

If you know of an industrial-zoned site that could work for the plant, we’d love to hear from you: [email protected]

🌍 Learning in Europe 🌍

Earlier this year we had the chance to spend time with Sonic Wax in the UK, working hands-on with their 7" and 12" Pheenix AD12 presses (the same model we’ll be running at Analog Dreams).

It was an incredible experience pressing many titles — including music from some of my favourite artists — while learning directly from Lee, Adam, Funk and the team. A huge thanks being so welcoming, supportive, and open in sharing their incredible knowledge. 🙏

Getting hands-on time with these machines before opening Analog Dreams has been invaluable. There’s a special kind of “magic” required day to day to coax the very best out of these presses, each with its own personality.

Now not only do we have some great experience to get started, but a in international network where we can press in either hemisphere for our clients.

This experience will stay with me as we get closer to bringing our own presses online in Adelaide. 💛

We had the chance to visit Synth Temple () in Melbourne — and what an incredible experience it was.

From the stunning collection of analog gear to their Dolby Atmos monitoring system, the whole space radiates passion for sound. Hearing it in action was absolutely mind-blowing.

A big thank you to Steve Jones for the warm tour, and huge congratulations to Steve and Tony Osmond for creating such a world-class facility. Their dedication to analog electronics and sonic quality really resonates with what we’re building at Analog Dreams.

If you’re an artist looking for the perfect environment to create, mix, or immerse yourself in music — we can’t recommend Synth Temple enough. The team is friendly, the vibe is inspiring, and the pricing is really reasonable for the quality you get.

✨ Lathe Restoration Progress ✨

It’s been a painstaking process — almost 10 months of work invested so far — but the results are showing.

Thanks to the incredible team at XL Productions, our Neumann lathe has undergone a complete bare-metal restoration, including:

Replacement of all electronics
Installation of a new cutting head
Suspension box rebuild
Total amplifier rebuild
Fresh repaint
New pitch computer
Newly manufactured microscope arm and playback arm attachement
Metal plating of parts to preserve them for the decades to come

This has been a true labour of love, ensuring that this iconic piece of equipment will not only serve us today, but will remain ready for future generations of vinyl record lovers.

We can’t wait to share the next chapter of its journey with you. 💛
