This Park in Australia Tells Punjabi History | A Proud Moment for Every Punjabi!
In this special episode, Mintu Brar takes us on a journey to Adenia Park in Riverton, Perth — a place that holds profound significance for the Sikh and Punjabi community in Western Australia. This park is home to the Australian Sikh Heritage Trail, a 250-meter pathway that commemorates the rich history and contributions of Sikh pioneers in Australia. 
Adenia Park is not just a recreational space; it’s a historical landmark. In the early 20th century, it served as a cremation site for the Sikh community, at a time when cremation was not legally recognized in Western Australia until the Cremations Act of 1929. The site was officially gazetted in 1932 as Reserve 20968 for the purpose of a cemetery, acknowledging the religious needs of the Sikh community.  
The park features plaques and signage that detail the journey of Sikh migrants, their roles as farmers, hawkers, and soldiers, and their enduring legacy in Australia’s development. It’s a place where the younger generation can connect with their roots, learn about their heritage, and feel immense pride in their identity. The Australian Sikh Heritage Trail was officially opened in 2018, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Sikh community and local authorities.
