Series: Moonfall [ #1]
Book: When the Moon Hatched
Author: Sarah A Parker .a.parker.author
I have mixed feelings about this book.
The first half of the book was a bit of a slog. There was almost too much "show, not tell" world-building going on, it was hard to keep up. Additionally, everything was written in deeply descriptive, colourful, flowery language - reminiscent to Lord of the Rings author Tolkien taking 12 pages to describe a tree. In this first half I found myself getting lost, having to flick back 2-3 pages to remember what scene I was in, what point were we trying to get to?!
By the second half of the book, either I had gotten used to this writing style, or the book itself had improved - hard to know. I think the introduction of more POVs and getting out of the FMC's head definitely helped.
Now all this may seem harsh (I am nothing if not honest in my book reviews!) - but I did actually enjoy the book. It has a lovely premise, a unique world and a compelling enough plot to keep me interested. Did I find the plot rather obvious? Yes - but I am a very suspicious reader, having been burned by missed clues in all previous reads and so my brain now clings to inane details on every page and connects the dots seemingly faster than the average booktok/booksta reviewer. In every detail, I question: "Why would the author use up precious word count real estate to give me this information?" So, the plot was obvious to me, especially by the halfway mark - but it was interesting enough that I kept reading anyway (gotta confirm that what I think the plot twist is actually is accurate!)
I will definitely read the second book, and hope that the series progresses more like the more-enjoyable second half of this instalment!
3.8 stars - I cannot get past the first half of the book sending me in circles.
