WINGS OVER MARY - Father's Day, September 5-6

THE Maryborough Military Aviation Museum is teaming up with the Wide Bay Historical Machinery Group’s annual rally this Father’s Day weekend for Wings Over Mary.

The heritage machinery rally showcases restored engines, tractors, farm equipment, vintage tools, and working demonstrations which go hand in hand with our local military history.

Vintage aircraft, military vehicles, and flyin for Maryborough Aero Club and plenty of food and displays will be on offer, all free to the public.

For dads chasing a true bucket list moment, Brisbane Bi Planes will offer adventure flights in their vintage fleet, including the iconic Tiger Moth. Bookings are essential via brisbanebiplanes.com.au or [email protected]

Great Ocean Helicopters will also be on site with scenic joy flights, with bookings available at greatoceanhelicopters.com.au or [email protected]

Aerobatic displays, restored military vehicles, working historic engines, a morse key exhibit and the chance to climb inside restored aircraft are all on offer, making it an ideal outing for children, fathers and grandfathers to share.

Food and drinks will be provided by local community groups throughout the weekend.

Wings Over Mary runs Saturday 5th September 9am–4pm and Sunday 6th September 9am–12pm at Maryborough Airport.

HADDOW FAMILY HONOURED

Seven generations of the Haddow family gathered with onlookers and dignitarys last Friday for the unveiling of Haddows Corner, a park named in their honour at the Scarness Rotunda, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the historic landmark.

The Haddows turned Scarness into a lively stop for locals and travellers, decades before large-scale tourism arrived.

After arriving in 1925, patriarch George Henry Haddow established a string of enterprises that effectively created Scarness’s first commercial centre.

HELP CELEBRATE THE HISTORY OF THE ROTUNDA

A century-old Fraser Coast landmark will take on a new chapter this Friday (Aug 14th), with the parkland surrounding the Scarness Band Rotunda to be officially named Haddow’s Corner in honour of one of the district’s pioneering families.

Mayor George Seymour said the naming recognises the Haddow family’s lasting influence on the development of Scarness after their arrival in 1925.

The family established the area’s first café and milk bar, later expanding into a newsagency, barber shop, billiard rooms and the district’s first petrol bowser.

Their popular entertainment venue, Haddow’s Hall, became a social hub for locals and visitors.

The Rotunda, originally built in front of Haddow’s Hall, remains one of the Fraser Coast’s most recognisable heritage structures.

The event will include the unveiling of the Haddow’s Corner signage, with Haddow family members and historian John Anderson from the Hervey Bay Historical Museum taking part.

The Hervey Bay City Musicians will perform from the Rotunda, and Mr Whippy Fraser Coast will donate 100 free ice creams in tribute to George Haddow Senior, who delivered ice cream around Hervey Bay by horse and cart in the 1920s.

The free community celebration will be held at Scarness Park on Friday 14 August from 3:30pm to 4:30pm, coinciding with the Rotunda’s 100th anniversary.

NATIONAL AUSALERT TEST HAPPENING TODAY

At 2pm today (Monday 27 July), Queenslanders will receive a test Critical Alert on their mobile devices as part of a nationwide AusAlert system check.

The test will be sent to most phones, along with some smart watches and tablets, and will trigger a loud siren‑like tone and vibration for around ten seconds.

A message will appear on screens clearly stating that it is only a test.

You don’t need to take any action. In a real emergency, AusAlerts provide vital details such as the type of incident, its location, how serious it is, instructions on what to do, and which emergency agency issued the warning.

If the test alert may disrupt you or cause distress, the only way to avoid receiving it is to switch your device off or place it in aeroplane mode. Keep it off for at least one hour from the scheduled test time.

MP DAVID BATT TO HOST BUSINESS FORUM IN HERVEY BAY

Federal Member for Hinkler David Batt MP will host a Business Breakfast Forum in Hervey Bay on Wednesday, July 29, bringing Opposition Leader Angus Taylor MP and Nationals Leader Senator Matt Canavan to the Fraser Coast.

The event, held at The Clubhouse, Hervey Bay Golf Club, invites small business owners, tourism operators and local residents to discuss current pressures facing regional industries.

The forum follows Mr Batt’s Small Business Survey conducted in May and will give attendees the chance to hear the Coalition’s vision for what it describes as a “fairer, freer, and better Australia.” Mr Batt said the session allows locals to outline how Labor’s Budget is affecting businesses across the region, adding that rising prices and falling real wages are key concerns raised by constituents.

Tickets cost $19.90, including a light breakfast. Registration is essential due to limited seating.

FATAL SCOOTER ACCIDENT - URANGAN

A man has died following a fatal traffic crash involving an e-scooter and an electric skateboard at Urangan on the evening of 15 July.

At around 7pm, an e-scooter and electric skateboard have collided while travelling on the Boat Harbour Drive bike corridor between Ann Street and Robert Street.

The e-scooter rider, a 39-year-old Scarness man, died at the scene.

A 30-year-old Urangan man, the electric skateboard rider, was transported to Hervey Bay Hospital with serious injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who have relevant vision that would assist with investigations is urged to contact police.

Investigations, including the circumstances leading up to the crash, remain ongoing.

RETRO FESTIVAL FULL OF MEMORIES

ODYSSEY Festival is set to supercharge the Fraser Coast across July 24 and 25, with organisers confirming a massive two day celebration of music, nostalgia and high energy entertainment at the Maryborough Showgrounds.

This year’s event cements Odyssey as Australia’s ultimate tribute festival, drawing fans from across Queensland for a weekend of retro glamour, iconic hits and immersive festival fun.

The action kicks off on Friday, July 24 with Stereo City Nights, the official Odyssey 70s dance party.

The waterfront precinct will transform into a glowing disco playground as DJs, dancers and a special guest MC pump out classic 70s hits.

The highlight of the night is Melbourne’s eight piece Yacht Rock Revival, delivering smooth, nostalgic light rock favourites that defined the decade.

Festival goers are encouraged to dress in their best 70s glam, adding to the electric atmosphere that will run until 10pm.

On Saturday, July 25, Odyssey Festival shifts into full swing with a blockbuster lineup of the nation’s most celebrated tribute acts.

The main stage will roll through a packed schedule featuring The Art of McCartney, GOLD: The Ultimate ABBA Show, The Elton John Experience, The Billy Joel Experience, and the internationally acclaimed Australian Bee Gees Show, direct from Las Vegas.

Each performance is timed to keep the energy rising throughout the day, culminating in a high impact finale that celebrates the golden age of music.

Festival director Mia Harland says the expanded two day format reflects the Fraser Coast’s growing appetite for major cultural events.
