With the aim of keeping juniors on the park, the South Coast Monaro (SCM) Barbarians U18 rugby team found its roots. Formed from a unique collaboration of several clubs, the Barbarians took some time to gel before showing an inspiring turnaround. Defying the odds, the Barbarians played in the 2025 finals of the ACT Junior Rugby Union U18s 3rd XV competition in their first season together.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Cooma-Monaro Unit celebrated the graduation of nine interns at a presentation night held last Wednesday, September 17, following their successful completion of the SES Youth Internship Program conducted alongside other SES units across NSW. The event, which marked the program’s second year of operation at Cooma-Monaro SES was attended by prominent community leaders, including Chris Hanna, Mayor of the Snowy Monaro Regional Council, alongside Deputy Mayor, Tricia Hopkins and Matthew Price, NSW SES Deputy Zone Commander for the South Eastern Zone.

As the bush fire season looms, firefighters in New South Wales are calling on households to prepare their homes and properties. The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has launched a new safety campaign, “One Ember Can End It,” to raise public awareness about the dangers of embers in bush fires. Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib and RFS Commissioner Trent Curtin joined volunteers at the Engadine Rural Fire Brigade Station to launch the campaign earlier in September.

An extensive archaeological technical study carried out across Snowy 2.0 project sites has deepened our understanding of Aboriginal and European occupation in the Snowy Mountains. Excavation carried out by NSW Archaeology principal archaeologist Julie Dibden found more than 35,000 indigenous stone artefacts across 782sqm at Lobs Hole, Tantangara and Ma**ca work fronts.

A full weekend of birdwatching, workshops, and citizen science is coming to the Snowy Monaro Region from October 17–19, thanks to a new community initiative led by local volunteers and supported by BirdLife Southern NSW. The project, Building a Birding Community in the Snowy Monaro, was awarded a 2025 BirdLife Australia Community Grant and is proudly delivered in partnership with Aussie Wild Nature Discovery, Wagtail Natives Nursery, and Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

Jindabyne locals and promising talents Zac Bradley-Hudson and Tilly Henness are set to showcase their downhill mountain biking skills on the world stage as part of the AusCycling Junior Downhill Mountain Bike Squad. Both athletes will compete at the 2025 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Valais, Switzerland. Competition for the downhill discipline kicks-off in Champéry today, Friday September 5, with qualifying runs for both men’s and women’s categories scheduled for 11am Central European Time.

The Cooma United RLFC Stallions First Grade side wrapped up a memorable season on Saturday, August 23, following a narrow 10-4 elimination final loss against the Eden Tigers at George Brown Oval. Despite the defeat, the Stallions enjoyed well earned ‘Mad Monday’ celebrations in Cooma yesterday following their committed performance throughout the season, marking their first appearance in the finals since 2021.
