2 for 1 special!

Called out for one whip snake and rocked up to these two battling it out.

This time of year, male snakes will battle it out for breeding rights! Very cool to witness especially in fast moving species, like these two yellow faced whip snakes.

Here’s a VERY IMPORTANT notice for all of my fellow snake catchers.

As many of you know, I also volunteer in wildlife rehabilitation, specifically reptiles and amphibians - with Reptile Rehabilitation Qld Inc.

I had one of these brown snakes in care, daily oral and topical meds, subcutaneous fluids and anti inflammatories every two days… for three weeks. Until the results came back and the only option was euthanasia.

These fungal infections are no joke! They basically rot inside and out. If you actually care about the animals you work with every day, you will take the time to check them over thoroughly, disinfect all equipment after EVERY single catch, one snake, one bag! These fungi are extremely stable outside of the body and live a long time on surfaces etc.

WE need to take action to limit the spread and give these animals a thorough health check and definitely DO NOT release ANY with symptoms! Irresponsible snake catchers are going to be a major cause of this spreading.. don’t let that be you!

⚠️ CALLING ALL SNAKE CATCHERS ⚠️

Our wild (and captive) snakes are facing a serious crisis.
At present there are 3 different fungal infections threatening our slithery friends.

These fungi are highly contagious and at this stage there is no effective treatment available.

In the past month, RRQi has had two confirmed cases in care, both Eastern Brown snakes (Pseudonaja textilis).

When the laboratory tests came back, it confirmed that both snakes were infected by Nannizziopsis AND Ophidiomyces.

These animals were subsequently euthanised and their bodies were sent to UQ for research into possible treatments to combat these highly contagious infections.

ANY snake can carry the fungus, and they can also be asymptomatic (without showing symptoms) to begin with.

The first signs look like bruises, which will develop into lesions that cause open wounds and scale damage - mainly on the belly and on the lower flanks.

Due to the thickening of the scales, shedding problems will occur leaving seeping surface wounds.

It‘s now up to YOU to NOT be a contributor to the spread of this disease!

We urge you to disinfect your gear AFTER EACH CATCH. A spray with F10 WILL NOT CUT IT!

The current recommended disinfection protocol is a minimum of 2 minute environmental exposure (soak) in at least 3% bleach solution or 70% ethanol or a 10 min exposure to 0.16% Roccal or Lysol products.

All the information above doesn’t just apply to snakes, but to ALL kind of reptiles.

Whilst Ophidiomyces ophidiicola only targets snakes, the Nannizziopsis and Paranannizziopsis fungi targets all types of reptiles, from dragons, to snakes, and even crocodiles.

ALL caught animals should get checked thoroughly and if showing signs they need to go to one of the WILDLIFE HOSPITALS.

Saving the lives of tradies one harmless snake at a time 😜

Little common tree snake found himself in the middle of some construction. The tradies didn’t know what it was, and did the right thing by keeping their distance and calling me straight away.

Save my number and call me anytime!

A SNAKE ATE MY CHICKEN!

What can you do to prevent snakes from entering your coop?

The number 1 most important thing is secure housing. Ensure that your chicken coop/run is well-constructed and secure. Use mesh with small holes (known as mouse and snake proof aviary mesh) instead of chicken wire, which has holes large enough to allow entry by snakes. Make sure to seal any gaps or cracks around the coop (including on the roof).

Monitor for digging under the mesh/coop by rodents, and correct as necessary. It doesn’t matter how well constructed the fence and roof is - if the rodents can dig under and into a coop, a snake can use those burrows to enter as well.

Maintaining the area is important too. Keep the area around your coop clean and free of debris, tall grass, and brush where snakes might hide. Regularly mow the lawn and remove any piles of rocks or wood. Keeping this area free of debris and clean will also reduce the likelihood of rodents hanging around, which is the main attractant for snakes to hang out in and around chicken coops.

Implementing these strategies will help create a safer environment for your chickens and reduce the likelihood of snake predation.

WHY DO SNAKE CATCHERS CHARGE?

I got a call the other day to remove a brown snake from someone’s yard. They told me they had dogs and needed it relocated. “No worries at all, I’ll be just under 20 minutes, and just to let you know, my call out fee is $120”.

They didn’t hesitate to tell me to f**k off.

It’s insane that people expect me to do my job free of charge. Do you also call a locksmith at 3am because you can’t get in your house, and then abuse them for having the audacity to charge for their professional service? How about your mechanic when you get your car fixed? A refrigeration technician when your aircon stops working in the middle of summer?

So why do some people expect us to
- Drop whatever we are in the middle of doing immediately
- use our fuel and put wear on our vehicle to drive to their residence, then to a suitable release site, and then back home
- risk our lives catching what is the second most venomous snake IN THE WORLD

All for free?

It costs me to gain and maintain my licensing, pay for fuel, purchase PPE and equipment, maintain my vehicle (I require a service every 6-7 weeks due to the km I drive), plus whatever else I’m missing.

Additionally, I am a professional service. Just like your mechanic, builder, fridgy etc. This is how I pay my rent and put food on the table for my family. I am available 24/7, I do not have any other source of income. And importantly, charging for my service is how I am able to attend rescues of injured and sick wildlife at no charge.

Please think about all of this before abusing me for needing to cover my costs and have enough left over at the end of the day to provide for my family.

Pictured is a pretty little eastern brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis) I recently removed from a house in Jimboomba. Dangerously venomous.

Got a call for an eastern brown or whip snake under a couch in Boronia Heights today, and was there in 5 mins. Found this little fella doing his best impression of a venomous snake instead 🙊

It’s always better to be safe than sorry! Just yesterday a man picked up a snake, and someone videoed as it bit him multiple times. He posted the video asking for a definitive ID but was ‘99% sure it was just a tree snake’.

The snake was an eastern brown. He called an ambulance on the advice of the person who IDed the snake, but 15 minutes later was unresponsive and paramedics had to work to keep his heart beating. He spent the night in ICU but is lucid today, thanks to the quick ID he got and the fantastic work of the medical professionals that attended.

Don’t risk it. If you need a snake relocated, ALWAYS call a professional!
