Sometimes pelicans are boats on the water, drifting with the tide. Today, I caught tow pelicans being planes above it, flying together over the silver sea.

This was today’s Quiet Catch. Nothing to collect except with your senses. Just a reminder that the natural world is always offering moments of wonder … we only have to notice them.

The Quiet Catch is a practice of paying attention in nature. It’s about casting our attention into the world around us and seeing what we catch. Sometimes, all it takes is slowing down and looking.

A dugong surfaced through the calm, silver waters at dusk .. over and over.

For just a moment, we caught it with our eyes. You’ve got to be quick to catch them! A gentle giant moving through the shallows, appearing and disappearing beneath the water to chomp on seagrass.

This is today’s Quiet Catch. Nothing to collect. Just a reminder that the natural world is always offering moments of wonder … we only have to notice them.

Dark Nature is an ecotherapy practice that explores our relationship with the natural world after dark. By stepping into nighttime environments, we engage our senses in new ways, slow our pace, and reconnect with the rhythms of the living world beyond daylight.

Dark Nature invites us to experience the night not as something to fear or avoid, but as a space for curiosity, reflection, and restoration. Research into nature connection and sensory awareness suggests that spending mindful time in natural environments can support wellbeing by reducing stress, encouraging calm, and strengthening our sense of connection with ourselves and the more-than-human world.

At low tide, the ocean inhales.
Drawing gently away from the shore, it leaves behind a world usually hidden beneath the waves. In the hush of sunset, it’s as though the sea is holding its breath, inviting us to notice what was there all along.

This was today’s Quiet Catch. Nothing to collect. Just a reminder that the natural world is always offering moments of calm … we only have to notice them.

The Quiet Catch is a practice of paying attention in nature. On an island, it’s about letting the sea settle your thoughts, the light slow your breathing, and the silence remind you that not every meaningful moment needs to be loud.

Sometimes the greatest thing you’ll catch is your own sense of peace.
