Do you get attached to recurring characters? I definitely feel protective of my favourites!

The General Hospital is the third book of the Menzies Mental Health series written by powerhouse Australian author couple Anne Buist and Graeme Simsion. (Swipe or see comments for more details.)

This is a marvellous series that tackles the intricacies of mental and physical health, the health system itself, and the pressures on the staff — all with heart and sensitivity.

In this installment, Dr Hannah Wright and her colleagues are on call to support the medical staff and their patients within the wards of the hospital.

Along with some favourite recurring characters, we meet new people presenting combinations of physical and mental issues that are as varied as they are complex.

If this is your first time hearing about these books, I strongly recommend you read them in order to fully comprehend the personal journey of the main character, the team relationships, and the background of the returning patients.

Further, I think the authors have introduced more controversial / dark issues as the series has progressed. I definitely appreciate the nuance of the situations in this latest novel more after having built up to it over the previous two books.

But be assured that despite the seriousness of some of the storylines, The General Hospital is ultimately not a depressing read. It's a testament to the authors that they find the hope in nearly every situation, and leave you uplifted.

I'm already looking forward to meeting everybody again in book four. They feel like family!

Have you read a good book about AI lately? Tell me your recommendations in the comments 👇

The Wild Unknown is a speculative middle grade book set in 2045, where AI tech is everywhere. When a boy goes missing, Eddie and his friends search for clues, but then he starts getting faster, stronger, and are those feathers growing out of his skin?! (Swipe or see comments for book description.)

This is a great kid friendly adventure that blends mystery and suspense with a boy's perspective of growing up and a thoughtful examination of the sinister implications of assistive technology.

The world building feels completely natural. There's imaginative tech that is different enough to feel futuristic but also recognisable enough that it is very believable (like a smart mirror that gives health recommendations!).

I really enjoyed spending time with Eddie's family. Most kids will sympathise with Eddie and his brother as they take advantage of the latest kit and online games, while their parents have certain anti-tech *dinosaur* tendencies ☺️

I won't give away any of the details, but this story will definitely resonate with anyone who has questions about the pros and cons of advanced AI.

But honestly? Most young readers will just enjoy the rollicking adventure, the funny pranks Eddie and his friends play on each other (screaming goat voice mail 😆), and the way the kids save the day.

(Plus there's a classic joke half told near the end that children will love, but if they can't work it out, parents can smugly deliver the punchline!)

A great story that can be a fun read or a serious conversation starter!

How beautiful is this proof of Theodora's Tea Shop!

I really enjoyed hearing author Christy Anne Jones talk about her book and her writing process at QBD’s 150 Years Festival of Reading.

Then I got to meet Christy at the Hachette / Follow the Realm stand at the Literary Event popup and have this gorgeous copy signed. (Swipe to see the final cover.)

Theodora’s Tea Shop is a 1920s inspired cosy fantasy for readers who love Studio Ghibli and especially Howl’s Moving Castle (the movie and the book!). It has magic, daemons, female friendship and found family, and draws in part on the author's own experience with Chronic Fatigue.

So here it is, pictured with Hachette’s gorgeous Fourth Wing tote and my custom designed Auburn Designs bookmark (it has a cat in a teacup - how appropriate!). You can get your own beautiful hand-made resin bookmark at QBD stores around the country.

💚 Thank you so much to QBD for inviting me along to celebrate their sesquicentennial, and to both QBD & event sponsor Hachette for their generous gifts.

Do you have a favourite book about books? This is now one of mine!

The Astral Library is about Alix Watson, who is struggling with her life but loves books and especially her part time job in the Boston Public Library. When things start going from bad to worse, she finds herself inside The Astral Library, where the lost can find sanctuary in their beloved stories. (Swipe or see comments for more details.)

This was fantastic! My first Kate Quinn book but it won't be my last.

I have so many notes about things that made me laugh and cry and snarl and wonder and most of all nod along going *yes, that's how wonderful and important books can be*!

There's lovely writing, bi representation, body positivity (Alix is a big girl), and a love interest that thinks she's beautiful.

But for me the library and the books are the main attraction. We get to visit Sherlock Holmes, Gatsby, Jane Eyre and more! Plus there's also acknowledgement of how gaming and visual arts can tell powerful stories, but the books are the main stars here!

And woven throughout are references to issues that society still seems to be struggling with. Things like respecting authors’ copyright, respecting someone's right to read a book you don't like, respecting trans rights — can you see a theme?

But it's definitely not all serious. You get romance, book dragons, jokes, sentient books, and beautiful costuming as well. And a resolution that will have you grinning.

This is the sort of book I want to read again as soon as I've finished it.

I loved it 💙 An absolute joy!

🩷 I can't rave enough about how much I loved Lady's Knight!

If you haven't started this series yet, then LUCKY YOU! You get to read both books back to back!

I'll be posting a review as soon as I've read it!

ONE KNIGHT STAND: COVER COPY
   Gwen: lady knight.
   Isobelle: knight's lady.
Fought a monster. Fell in love.
But neither has said the words yet...
Gwen earned her title the hard way.
Now suddenly everyone wants a piece of the hero.
Isobelle is happy to undertake charming adventures at her knight's side - and avoid thinking about what happens next.
But when the pair travel to a seaside town, the tourist traps hide something slimy and deadly.
This monster wants more than souvenirs. If Gwen and Isobelle are going to save the day (and each other), they'll have to stop saying they're fine, tell the truth, and get a grip - before the tentacles do it for them.

Why now?
I was lucky enough to be invited to QBDs 150 Year Festival of Reading celebration and their Literary Escape Popup this Thursday.
I've been to lots of author talks but this is my first time attending an event as an influencer and I want to bring you along with me!
It's the kick I've needed to be brave. Plus I'm tired of working out ways to film reels without showing my face.
So stay tuned to see what the event (and the future!) has in store for us 🩷

Do you like crime thrillers or psychological thrillers? This one's a bit of both!

Where Truth Ends is a thriller about Meg who attends a supposedly peaceful climate protest. When it's followed by an explosion that's declared a terrorist attack, she goes on the run. But the authorities aren't the only ones chasing her! (Swipe or see comments for more details)

I raced through this! From the opening scenes I was intrigued and trying to work out what was going on.

The story is presented in a split timeframe, where you follow Meg in the past and the present. This works really well because you learn exactly how she ended up at the protest, so you have all the same information she has in the aftermath.

I found Meg a really engaging character. She's not extraordinary in any way, but her investigations and attempts to outwit her pursuers are clever yet believable.

And shout out to the author for an MFC with asthma. As a fellow sufferer it was refreshing to read about someone who had to take the cold night air into account in her adventures!

There is also some nice environmental representation in the book — not as much as I expected, but that's on me. It is a thriller after all, not a polemic.

Overall, an engrossing page turner! I'm definitely curious to check out this author's backlist!

🎊 Happy publication to Detective Beans and the Map of Mystery 😸

And huge thanks to Penguin Kids for spoiling me with this gorgeous box of goodies. How stinkin’ cute are those candies with little kitten faces and the embossed pencils!

Detective Beans and the Map of Mystery is the third in the award-winning graphic novel series for kids, featuring kitten detective Beans and his best friend Biscuits on another twisty case! (See the comments for more details.)

I absolutely loved this!

It’s the first of the series that I've read and honestly? — If I was a kid I'd be *obsessed*. Heck, I'm an adult and I'm wondering whether there's posters and stuffies of Beans & co! 😊

The humour is top tier. It's packed with gags that are funny enough to keep young readers turning the pages, but also witty enough to entertain the grown ups.

(Some of my favourite pages are the verbose crime minded snail, and Biscuits proving that the answer to everything really is in the library! 😆)

And the artwork! Super engaging and with its own clever jokes in the background, like newspaper headings (gotta watch those Dodgy Ducks) and the fairground’s Tunnel of Terrier (think about it!)

If you've got a kid around 7 and up, or feel like enjoying an escapade yourself, this is a really fun and entertaining read.

I think my next adventure will be the hunt for books one and two!
