Give them one small job to learn. Show them how it works and explain why it matters. Then let them try, with someone beside them.

It could be advancing the song lyrics during rehearsal. Something manageable, with time to practise and ask questions.

Afterwards, ask, “How did that feel?”

A lot of church media training focuses on how to use the software.

But running media well during a church service involves more than knowing which button to press.

Timing, flow, consistency and knowing what is happening in the room all matter.

That is the thinking behind a new training option I’m offering called Beyond the Slides.

It helps church media teams run media with better timing, flow and consistency, regardless of which presentation software they use.

Online training is available, making it possible for your team to participate together without needing me to travel to your church.

I am considering holding one on Saturday 24 October and am currently gauging interest before I organise everything.

The options include video production on a budget, livestreaming on a budget, ProPresenter, Church Graphic Design Basics and building a healthy media team.

It could be a half-day workshop on one topic, a full-day workshop on one topic, or two half-day topics together. Full-day registration would include lunch.

There would be a registration cost, but the price has not been set yet.

One of the easiest ways to reduce stress in your church media team is to train more than one person for every role.

If only one volunteer knows how to operate ProPresenter, manage the livestream or solve a particular problem, your whole system depends on that person being available every Sunday.

Choose one role this month and train a second person to cover it.

They do not need to know everything straight away. Start with the basics, let them practise and give them the confidence to have a go.

Does running church media feel stressful every Sunday?

The problem may not be your equipment or your volunteers.

Unclear roles, last-minute changes and systems that rely too heavily on one person can quickly create stress for the whole team.

A few simple changes can make Sundays run more smoothly:

• Plan ahead• Give each volunteer a clear role• Create checklists• Train more than one person for each position• Talk through everything before the service begins

Surprises will still happen. But good preparation helps your team respond calmly, work together and get things sorted.

Photography and videography share some skills, but filming well brings a whole new set of challenges.

During my recent video-making workshop, participants learned what to look for before pressing record, including lighting, framing, sound and camera movement.

One participant shared:

“I have done a bit of still photography before but not videography. It has been a really great day learning about what to look for in videos and how to film well to get the best output.”

Better equipment can help, but better filmmaking skills make the biggest difference.

One of my main goals when teaching video production is to make it feel achievable, even for people who do not consider themselves tech savvy.

After my first video-making workshop, Kylie shared:

That is exactly what practical training should do.
