🐐BOOK SPOTLIGHT🐐

'Kid' has been out frolicking in the world for 10 days and has already won the hearts of so many!

A modern-day classic about a young goat who discovers the meaning of family, in a limited-edition deluxe hardcover. Written and illustrated by Peter Carnavas, bestselling author of Leo and Ralph.

Ever since his parents chased away a fox and never returned, Kid has stayed with Audrey the hen in the chook yard. Audrey tells him stories of his mum and dad’s daring and bravery. She says they live on the nearby mountain, and Kid longs to leave the farm to find them.

And then, one day, he discovers he is big enough to jump the fence …

Will a wild adventure up the mountain help Kid find where he belongs?

'Kid' is available now both online and at your local bookstore.

P.S. For a peek into Pete's latest musical obsession, take a listen to 'The World is Not Good Enough' by Sean Solomon.

💫ACQUISITION NEWS💫

UQP is delighted to announce that we have acquired the debut poetry collection from Naarm-based poet and academic Tim Loveday. 'your father was a bastard' is an impressive work, distinguished by its use of long-form narrative poetry and its examination of male violence as legacy. These poems recount stories, both archetypal and particular, of how this violence can shadow and permeate a family, and how people adapt to its presence and its threats.

A work of dark wit and understanding, it sings with tense, challenging critiques of contemporary masculinities, stressing the often-uncomfortable interrelationships between machismo, regionality, class, coloniality and the climate collapse.

Throughout, Loveday steers a clear course, offering a vulnerable interrogation of the damage done—and an insight into how, in spite of it all, things might be different.

UQP has acquired world rights and will publish in May 2027.

🟠 BOOK SPOTLIGHT 🔶

'after war' by Dženana Vucic

after war is an unwavering exploration of brutality and its consequences, moving adroitly between personal experience and the written record to plumb the ‘after’ and ongoingness of war, genocide and displacement. Unfurling from the Bosnian war and its traumas, this searing debut examines identity and un/belonging; language and its elisions; history and how we remember it; violence and how we are implicated in it.

‘A formidable first book filled with terrible beauty, fury and power. Vucic’s exquisite, unyielding verse shows us what it means to look closely at the horrors of war and genocide. This is a poetics of refusal: Vucic refuses erasure of her language, her identity, and her humanity. Vucic’s is an astounding, important and original new voice in Australian poetry.’ Eileen Chong

🌟 AWARD NEWS 🌟

UQP is delighted to announce that the recipient of the 2026 UQP Quentin Bryce Award is 'And in the Morning', the debut novel by Lenny Robinson. ☁️

We're also thrilled to share the book's beautiful cover with you for the very first time.

The award, which recognises The Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce, is for a book on UQP’s list each year that celebrates women’s lives and/or promotes gender equality.

This prismatic gem of a debut novel reflects the experiences of women across three wars and the damage done to the men they love – it is capacious and intimate in equal measure.

Of selecting And in the Morning from UQP’s 2026 list, Dame Quentin Bryce says: "Lenny’s book movingly and gracefully considers how a series of wars that involved Australia have impacted women’s lives: as mothers, partners, daughters, and as those who took on official roles in the forces. A gloriously written, intricate and thought-provoking work of historical fiction."

'Joey and the Junjardy'

Written by Allison Rocca
Illustrated by Brenton E McKenna

Release date: 30/06/2026

A funny, raucous middle-grade romp grounded in First Nations storytelling, featuring a mischievous character brought to life by debut author Allison Rocca.

Joey Gibbs is always up for a laugh. What isn’t funny: the ‘Big Trouble’ he caused at his old school that meant his family had to move back home to Coolibah Creek. Joey’s going to keep his head down this time. New school, new mates, new start. But trouble seems to have a way of finding him.

When his sister and cousin start getting mysteriously pranked, Joey looks for answers from his Wakka Wakka culture. He discovers he’s caught the attention of the Junjardy, a hairy little trickster. Joey can’t resist making mischief again with his secret partner in crime. But as the jokes spiral out of control, he must work out what the Junjardy wants with him before disaster strikes.

Action-packed with loads of humour and heart, Joey and the Junjardy shows us how the smallest of creatures can help you to stand tall and proud.

Reconciliation reads ❤️

Over the last fortnight (and throughout the year), our team have been out and about adding First Nations books to local street libraries across the community. 📚

This year's Reconciliation Week theme, All In, emphasises that reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us can take actions to make change. Meaningful reconciliation requires ongoing commitment, responsibility, and action.

We’re grateful to be able to share and celebrate powerful First Nations voices in even small ways like this.

🖤💛❤️
