The Star Entertainment Group (ASX: SGR) has secured an eleventh-hour reprieve from falling into administration with a new $940 million debt deal and plans to abandon its $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf casino in Brisbane in a move that has the group doubling down on the Gold Coast market.

The plan, announced this evening after the share market closed, will ultimately see The Star make a complete exit of the Brisbane market and its 50 per cent interest in the Destination Brisbane Consortium for a cash payment of $53 million – or a little over half the equity contributions of $91.5 million the company made in the September quarter to complete the project.

South-East Queensland is preparing to shutdown later today as Cyclone Alfred bears down on Brisbane and the region braces for landfall in the early hours of Friday morning.

Translink has announced that public transport services across the region will cease from this evening until further notice, bringing the region and its population of four million to a grinding halt.

Some bus and ferry services have already been suspended while schools across the south-east and in affected areas of northern NSW will also be closed from tomorrow, along with most businesses.

While airports remain open for now, travellers have been urged to check with their airline carriers for any potential cancellations should they arise.

The City of Gold Coast has today issued an alert for everyone in the city to “take shelter at home or in a safer place by 6pm” which is when the risk of destructive wind gusts and significant flooding is expected to start impacting the Gold Coast. Logan City has just issued a similar notice.

For new users of moomoo, enjoy the investing process without fees entirely for the first 180 days of trading as long as you sign up before 31 August 2023.

Once those 180 days are up though the fee structure for trading ASX shares is quite straightforward; for every trade under $10,000 you’ll only pay $8.80. Once you cross that threshold, the fee will be just 0.08 per cent of the total transaction value.

The fees are even cheaper when using moomoo to trade US shares; enjoy a flat fee of $1.99 for any trade up to USD$30,000. Any trade over that amount though and you’ll have to pay $0.0099 per share in fees.

As interest rates rise, many Australians are pointedly feeling the cost of living crisis worsen daily and are looking to cut back on non-essentials to balance t
