THE POWER OF STILLNESS

Sitting at the keyboard, fingers poised, ready to write, and nothing, nada, nought… no thought at all!

When this happens, I have a choice of techniques I can use, most of which involve getting active with keys… even free typing which looks a bit like this: no;vahp woieua ;ojr’;ougt; jthp;aiuh’paof;aie’tp;oph… you get my drift. Just type ‘til something starts to form – it’s fun, relaxes your mind, and suddenly something useful comes and you are good to go.

But what if nothing comes - your mind just stays blank?

In those moments, a truly powerful action is to embrace the emptiness - to meditate and allow yourself to step into the silence and use it to relax, re-energise, and renew.

Sitting in silence is powerful. Often, it’s in silence that we find our biggest lessons, our greatest inspiration – lessons and inspiration that were hidden in the noise and business of everyday life.

When we put pressure on ourselves to deliver, we raise our adrenaline and cortisol levels – which to a certain extent can be helpful for performance - in fact, that is the reason they exist. But [and it’s a big but] there is a level at which that hormone combination pushes us the other way and prevents creative thought. In those moments, meditation helps to bring us back to the performance level, rather than the block level.

That’s where stillness serves us as writers.

I had to learn to make it a regular routine practice (a work in progress for me even now). When I meditate regularly, my writing steps up to a whole new level. It’s definitely a worthwhile tool to utilise.
