Our 10 weeks trip is coming to an end... We stayed the last night at the Fish River Canyon Roadhouse where we watched the sunset settling behind the canyon. It’s definitely worth visiting the roadhouse and Fish River Canyon, with beautiful views, heaps of cool stuff at the roadhouse, old cars and a great restaurant.

After travelling for 54 days and 12,000km through South Africa, Botswana & Namibia, it’s been an absolutely amazing experience. We explored three totally different countries, from the vast landscapes to endless amounts of animal encounters.

We dropped the car off yesterday and will be spending our last week in Worcester (South Africa) with my in-laws.

We had a great experience with for our hire car. Our selected setup was perfect for the variety of tracks driven, the vehicle equipment was well maintained and easy to use.

was our choice for route planning and bookings for Botswana & Namibia. It made the whole trip so much easier to just follow the schedule and have all required documents for border crossings, accommodation etc ready to go.

We used offline maps/gps from We also purchased the Tinkers Tourist Map (available to purchase at most Gates and fuel stops) which had heaps of great information about the Game Reserves, wildlife to expect and much more. Both are highly recommended.

My LUMIXS5II paired with the 150-600mm sigma lens was next level. A must have for wildlife photography

📍🇳🇦 At Kronenhof Lodge - Klein Aus Vista - Luderitz - Kolmanskop Ghost Town

We made our way further south from Sossusvlei towards where we spent the night and had wonderful dinner after a long drive. The next morning followed with breakfast, and Clay pigeon shooting which was a lot of fun!

We continued our journey to Klein Aus Vista, from where we visited Luderitz and the famous Ghost Town of Kolmanskop.

The Klein Aus Vista Desert Horse Inn was a wonderful stay, it offers cosy cottages/ private campsites, has a great restaurant with beautiful views all around. It’s only 1 1/2 hours drive to Luderitz and Kolmanskop. Highly recommended to visit if you’ve in Namibia

📍🇳🇦 Sossusvlei - Dune 45 & Deadvlei

Namibia’s landscape is just phenomenal! We stayed two nights at where we spent most days relaxing at the pool, having a wonderful massage, or going on a morning quad bike tour to watch the sunrise over the dunes. The hospitality was amazing, would definitely recommend this place if you’re heading towards Sossusvlei. It’s about an hours drive to the Namib-Naukluft Park Gate where you can explore the Park and choose which dune you want to conquer/climb :)

📍🇧🇼 Kgaladagi Transfrontier Park

Mabuasehube Campsite 4 • Motopi Campsite 1 • Nossob Rest Camp • Mata Mata Rest Camp

We made our way from the Moremi all the way south to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

We left our halfway accommodation Kalahari Game Lodge early morning and decided to drive through Kang/Hukuntsi and made our way down to the fence line to the Mabuasehube Gate.

We did not know what to expect from the road, but the conditions were pretty good and made it in around 4 hours to the gate.

Our stay at Mabuasehube Campsite 4 was outstanding with amazing views overlooking the salt pans. We slept in and left camp late before making our way to Motopi Camp 1, approximately halfway between Mabuasehube and Nossob. It has a pit toilet, heaps of trees for shade and that’s about it. We spent the afternoon chilling in the tent and watched our first movie as there was no wildlife around which kept us occupied most of the times.

We decided to stay at Nossob Rest Camp instead of Poletswa which would add another 100km going up north. However, there were so many animals around the Nossob area, where we spent most afternoon exploring the tracks. Nossob is well maintained, has a fuel station, birdwatching nest, shop, clean showers, toilets and kitchen area if you want to cook.

The next day we drove to Mata Mata where we were supposed to cross borders to Namibia. However, there were some miscommunication we did not know about as we needed to stamp out our passports at Twee Rivieren Botswana Border Control, so that we are able to cross through the Mata Mata Gate (South Africa to Namibia).

Long story short, we had to drive 120km each way to get our Botswana departure stamp and drove back to Mata Mata and made it just in time before Border closure (With our next stop still 4 hours away). We arrived at Africa Safari Lodge at 8pm, had a wonderful sleep and continued our journey refreshed the next morning to get our hire car to Toyota for its 10,000km service…

📍🇧🇼 Change of Plans! After arriving in the Khwai Concession, our campsite Mbudi has been temporarily closed due to some landowner issues!

We made some unsuccessful calls with the satellite phone and dropped into some of the lodges we could see along the dusty road. We took a chance and stopped in at Saguni Safari Lodge where we were welcomed with amazing hospitality. We decided to skip the Mbudi and Xakanaxa camping and rather stay at Saguni for 4 nights to rest and relax.

Saguni Safari Lodge is an all inclusive Luxury Tented Safari Lodge, we were taken on morning and sunset safari drives every day. We saw the most amazing sights with birds and animals, from the mother Leopard watching over her cub to the Hyena pups waiting for their mothers to return with food.

We were driven to the Khwai airfield where we were picked up by Helicopter Horizons for an amazing scenic flight around the Khwai and Okavango Delta areas. Seeing the Delta from the sky definitely gives you a better sense of the vastness and life in the area.
We were then picked up by our ranger who continued the safari route for the morning before heading back for lunch.

I will admit that we are generally more private and not a fan of group activities however we thoroughly enjoyed the company of a wonderful American couple who were there with us.

We left the Moremi Game Reserve and continue our journey towards the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

📍🇧🇼 Savuti - Campsite 6 did not disappoint! What an epic location to experience the vast amount of animals in this area. We drove approx 5 hours with stops along the way from Kasane.

The drive was not difficult, just heaps of sand and a one way track. We had our first puncture after nearly 10.000km

On arrival approximately 500m before the gate we spotted a Lion and Lioness hiding in the bushes from the afternoon sun and keeping their elephant kill protected. We stayed for a while to explore the surroundings and were fortunate enough to witness a Martial Eagle catching a Guineafowl at one of the watering holes.

Campsite CV6 is hidden away at the far end. The ablution blocks are clean and tidy with hot water and flush toilets.

We heard many lions around camp during the sunset and night time hours. The wildlife sounds are just amazing to listen to. We left camp early the next morning to check on the lions and waterholes before heading to our next stop at the Khwai Concession and Moremi Game Reserve. Definitely worth to visit, wish we stayed longer!

Check out for route planning etc. and if you are in need for a reliable over landing hire car for your next adventure

It was nice staying at the after 5 days of camping in the wild. First thing first, a hot shower and great food at the restaurants.

The next day, we went on a private boat tour to explore the Chobe River. We personally always book private tours, so we can decide where to stop and to take photos etc and don’t have to worry about other people’s privacy.

We had two wonderful nights, recharged and relaxed at the pools. We filled the car and stocked up our supplies the afternoon before we left, early in the morning we could just jump in the car and depart Kasane to head to our next destination Savuti. I was looking forward to it since we planned the trip for so long with meticulous detail and it did not disappoint. I can’t wait to show you the photos!!!

Check out for your next trip, we used them to organise our route and bookings for Botswana and Namibia. And for our hire car. I highly recommended both as their service and experience is above all.

📍🇧🇼 Makgadikgadi Pans National Park - Kumaga Campsite 1 & Nxai Pan National Park

We continued our journey from the Central Kalahari to our next campsite at Kumaga where we spend two nights. Easy access to the gate and no need to take the ferry, as the Boteti river is unfortunately dry since about 2021 as mentioned by staff.

We stayed at Campsite 1 which is right next to the ablution blocks, but it felt still private with only two other cars around. The campsite has one big tree for shade, a nice fireplace and a bin. Best campsites would be Nr 2 & 3 as both are at the river side, however Nr2 would be my pick as it has a big tree for shade. The ablution blocks are clean and tidy, and have been cleaned every day.

There are many tracks to explore, and you can drive down by the river which is filled with Zebras, Elephants, Buffalo’s and Birds. We sat at the river for hours and just watched the herds coming by. Would highly recommend to check it out.

We day visited the Nxai Pan National Park the morning we left our camp and checked out the Salt Pans and Baine’s Baobabs Trees. We didn’t make it all the way up to the South Gate for game viewing unfortunately.

Again, all tracks are sand but easy to drive. To make it even more easier for you and the car, always deflate the tyres.

We played around with different tyre pressures and found 28psi rear and 25psi front works best for us as the car has standard suspension setup and is quite heavy with the setup and all our gear.

Check out for route planning etc. We enjoyed all campsites and accommodation so far and have many more to explore and share with you.

📍🇧🇼 Central Kalahari - Kori Campsite 2

Beautiful campsite with only 4 sites around this area. The CKK4 is hidden away and covered by a big tree for shade during the day. It felt very private, and you will only see some cars passing by on the side track from time to time. It has good ground space to make you feel safe and you are able to see into the grasses around you. Bring heaps of water, if you want to use the bucket shower.

Heaps of entertainment during the night, as you will hear the lions and other animals.

We stayed for two nights and absolutely enjoyed it. Definitely worth to check out the Deception Valley area, and surrounding waterholes for game viewing

We entered through the Matswere Gate, and fuelled up at Rakops patrol station which is a short 5min drive or so. The drive itself into the Kalahari was easy to drive, you follow a one way sand track all the way through. We set our tyre pressure and had heaps of fun exploring the area.

📍🇧🇼 Central Kalahari - Sunday Pan Campsite 4

Absolutely stunning views from our campsite overlooking the Pan. We were lucky enough to come across a lone lioness just before we got to our camp. We arrived late just before sunset, as we had a long drive from our previous location and needed to stock up some supplies and fuel etc before hitting the sand tracks into the Kalahari.

We spent 3 nights in total in the Kalahari, explored as much tracks as possible and spotted many different types of animals. Such a beautiful part to visit.

The track into the Kalahari was not very difficult, just a one way sand track which is easily drivable with a 4x4. Keep in mind to have the correct tyre pressure and you’ll have heaps of fun hitting the tracks

📍🇧🇼 Kubu Island - A dry granite rock island located in the Makgadikgadi Pan area of Botswana.

We had a wonderful day exploring the Island. Slept under one of many boab trees and enjoyed the stunning sunset over the Salt Pans 🌅

It’s been long days of highway and off-road driving, so plan ahead as you will be surprised how time flies…

We crossed into Botswana at the Martin’s Border Drift 🇧🇼

We stayed the night before at Weltenreden just before the Border Post. We had an amazing experience at Pieter and Petra’s lodge, with amazing dinner and breakfast before heading to the Border the next morning…

Smooth border crossing process, it only took us approx an hour to go through and went back on the highway to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary where we stayed for the night.

We did an afternoon drive through their nature reserve and spotted many Rhinos and Zebras.

The next morning we packed up early and continued north to Kubu Island. Check out my next post to see some amazing photos from the Island 🇧🇼🤩
