WHAT THE F IS F STOP?
This has got to be one of the most confusing settings to get my head around when I was a beginner photographer and was self teaching. Sometimes I would figure it out…kinda….then I would forget what I thought it was.
Don’t google it! You will only end up more confused. Instead, here is the super simple explanation.
F stop controls how much you have in focus (think blurred background on portraits)
Small f stop number – small amount in focus
Big f stop number – big amount in focus
To blur your background, shoot on the smallest f stop available to you on the lens you are shooting on (this will be somewhere in the range of 1.8-4) and watch your photos look more professional!
Easily practise your f stop by shooting in the AV or non green a mode (if you are a Nikon shooter). You can play with your f stop in this mode and your camera will take care of the rest.
So, before you go remember – small f stop gives you a small amount in focus x
