I didn’t know what was next, but I knew what I couldn’t keep living through being so freakin sad all day every day while trying to look like everything was ok - it was crushing my soul…and so far from ok.
I had to start choosing me, my peace, my sanity. I had to show my girls that it is so important to know that how you are continually treated by another person is a decision. You can choose to accept it or you can move on to more peaceful waters and gain back some of myself I had lost over the previous 10 years.
Moving on by myself was terrifying. I had nearly walked out with nothing but the clothes I was wearing several times just from the sheer frustration of having to wait for a sale price that was “acceptable”.
I just wanted it to be over. My friends encouraged me to hang in there so I had a decent start for my girls and did not struggle so hard.
It took some time to get the sale of the house through, a long time, a long long time. Then we lived with friends of friends for a few months until I found a house for my girls and I to call home.
He told me I would never make it on my own. I think this just fuelled me even harder to make it work.
Looking back now, I realise that version of me — scared, heartbroken, uncertain — was also the strongest I’ve ever been. She had no map, no guarantees… just faith that life could be better than constant survival.
And she was right.
If you’re standing on the edge of your own “enough is enough,” trust that peace is worth the leap.
If you’ve ever had to choose yourself even when it terrified you — this one’s for you.
Because invisible was never your truth — just your survival mode.
