New Zealand’s cruise body has launched the next phase of a national strategy as the industry works to reverse a 40 per cent drop in visitation against record global cruise growth.

The New Zealand Cruise Association (NZCA) released Horizon 2: Integration & Impact this week, the second phase of the Cruise Aotearoa New Zealand 2040 strategy, alongside the preliminary 2026/27 cruise schedule. While the new cruise season shows a further reduction in ship calls, early projections suggest the rate of decline may be slowing. The national year-on-year fall currently sits at around three per cent, a marked improvement on the steep drops recorded over the past two seasons. Some regions remain significantly down, with certain ports recording falls of up to 25 per cent while others are showing growth.

From alignment to action

The original Cruise Aotearoa New Zealand 2040 strategy, launched in 2024, focused on building consensus across the sector.

Cruiseabout is expanding its national retail network with two new storefronts planned for Indooroopilly in Brisbane and Doncaster in Melbourne later this year, as demand for cruising among Australian travellers continues to rise.

The new locations will take Cruiseabout’s retail footprint to 11 stores nationwide and come as the latest Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Source Market Report revealed Australian cruise passenger numbers increased 9.5 per cent from 1.3 million to 1.4 million travellers.

Cruiseabout General Manager Brad Kennedy said the growing appetite for cruising was creating strong opportunities for specialist consultants.

“It’s hard to believe that in just three years we’ve managed to rebuild an entire brand and have 11 stores in almost every state, in addition to three incredibly successful remote teams,” Kennedy said.
