After a quick visit to Gozo, we returned to Valletta via the fast ferry at Mgarr Harbour.

With blue skies and sunshine today, we took the 330 bus from the bus station to the coastal town of Xlendi.

It's not far (although nothing on Gozo is!), but it's downhill all the way!

Xlendi is at the mouth of a long, deep canyon that empties into a small bay with steep, rugged cliffs enclosing the town.

The place is mainly given over to international tourism and local holiday makers. It's waterfront is a cluster of restaurants and small tour boats. Around further, people lay prone, soaking up the sun and working on their tans. It's all pretty relaxed!

Today was Independence Day for Malta, 62 years in fact! Back in Independence Square a brass band entertained a host of dignitaries to mark date.

So we're spending a couple of nights on the island of Gozo, just North of Malta while our home owner is back between trips.

We took the fast ferry over to Mgarr from Valletta, and a bus (just six kms) to Victoria, the capital where we're staying.

As soon as we could check in (3.00pm) we headed out again to check out the Ċittadella, the fortress that dominates the city. From high on it's ramparts we could see right back to the sea over the city and nearby towns.

Another million steps later, we called into the Castle Bar for a couple of quick refreshments. We were fortunate enough to meet the owner and his mates who were having a jam session with guitars. They were supposed to be closed, but encouraged us to stay!! πŸ˜›

By now it was nearly dark and we said goodbye to our new friends and headed down to Pjazza san Gorg (St.George Square). After a sticky beak in the Basilica, where mass was just ending, we adjourned to one of the piazza's many cafΓ©s to take in the atmosphere of post mass socializing. Families young and old catching up with each other over some drinks and light meals. I suppose it's been like this for centuries!
