Only two days earlier, on May 22nd, 2011, the town of Joplin had been devastated by one of the deadliest tornadoes in modern American history.

Television broadcasts showed entire neighborhoods erased, schools torn apart, vehicles twisted beyond recognition, and emergency crews wandering through landscapes that no longer looked real.

Across the country, people watched in disbelief as reporters stood among endless piles of rubble trying to describe the scale of destruction around them.

For many people living across Tornado Alley, it felt impossible that anything worse could happen so soon.

But weather forecasters were staring at their radar screens with growing concern on the morning of May 24th, 2011.

The atmosphere over the southern Plains looked explosive. Meteorologists could already see the ingredients assembling over Oklahoma.
