Five years on from 'Spectral Devastation', Solicitor are back on the highway with fresh oil in 'Enemy in Mirrors'. It’s a record that leans darker and more melodic, but still burns rubber with the same horsepower they’ve been known for since day one. I'm sure hoons for American speed metal have been hanging out for the next chapter from Solicitor. The wait’s been worth it.

Frontwoman Amy Lee Carlson is the driver here. Her pipes are the high-performance custom job, pushed right to the front of the mix where they belong. In a band with an engine room this strong, you want the kind of voice that can handles corners at full tilt, and she does. Amy also produced the album’s artwork herself, stamping her vision from the mic to the merch table.

And when the road opens up, the twin-guitar assault of Matthew Vogan and Patrick Fry takes over. They have some of the best all-out dueling leads with sharp bends into screaming solos. It's the kind of interplay that reminds you why this band stands tall in the speed metal realm.

On this new one, Solicitor retain their leather-bound, head-down energy of classic speed metal firing on all cylinders, with nothing held back. This isn't stock standard, don't miss your order and play it louder than a straight-piped V8.

Temtris
'Queen of Crows'
(Wormholedeath - 8 August 2025)

This is Temtris, together since 2000 following the dissolution of Labyrinth, Temtris are elder raptors of the Australian metal scene. Their music wings across vast skies of traditional, melodic, power, and thrash.

With eight albums to their name, Temtris are now poised to strike with their newest, Queen of Crows, on August 8 via Wormholedeath Records. It’s a bold and emotionally charged release, full of dark themes and an unflinching gaze into the consequences of human actions.

There’s a sombreness to the lyrical content. Not just bleak for the sake of it, but rooted in reflection and forged from fires of lived experience.

There’s no question that commanding lead vocalist Genevieve Rodda leads the charge with her exceptionally powerful voice. But there’s more propulsion from the back that keeps the eagle soaring. Temtris are a tight unit with a muscular rhythm section, razor-winged twin-guitar attack. And a flair for dramatic songwriting that gives Queen of Crows both weight and lift.

This bird of prey show their scars but also their sharpened talons. Queen of Crows feels like a culmination of their flightpath so far: mature, predatory and full of dark grace. Excellent release.

Pestilential Shadows
'Wretch'
(Northern Silence / Brilliant Emperor - 5 September 2025)

This is one of Australia’s longest-running and foremost black metal bands, PESTILENTIAL SHADOWS, who formed in 2003, have carved a singular path through the underground with a body of work that towers in scope and consistency.

Primarily driven by multi-instrumentalist Balam over the decades, with drummer Basilysk proving durable at the back. The band has rebuilt these past few years with bassist Lithuz and guitarist Drekavac joining, both themselves of other prominent metal bands in very different styles.

Their eighth studio album Wretch comes via Northern Silence and the ever-dependable Brilliant Emperor, and it is black metal steeped in rot and salt. The riffs are hardened like hull timbers, waterlogged with sorrow and scorched by cannon fire. The atmosphere rolls in like a dense coastal fog. There’s a regal austerity to the arrangements, the sound of being lashed to the mast and pushed into dark, uncharted waters.

Another landmark record from a band that continues to evolve without compromise, once again delivering black metal of a distinctly Australian solemnity. I know that Pestilential Shadows will soon set sail for a massive European tour, before returning to ports closer to home in NZ and Australia to spread gloom.

ASHEN
'Leave the Flesh Behind'
(Redefining Darkness - 22 August 2025)

Here’s another brutal reminder of what Perth has to offer. Ashen returning with their second full-length Leave the Flesh Behind, a thick slab of groove-drenched, mid-tempo death metal, crafted with absolute intent.

Formed in 2019, Ashen bring together members from Vespers Descent, Darkenium, Chaos Divine, Burial Ground, and Nexus. A serious pedigree that shines through in every crushing riff and scalding vocal line.

Their earlier Godless Oath EP and debut Ritual of Ash (on the now sadly shutterted Bitter Loss label) already laid strong foundations, and this new effort swells and surges even heavier. The band shift effortlessly between crawling doom-laden moments and hammering head-nod grooves. It’s muscular, deliberate death metal with a bruising character.

Another strong release from the ever-reliable Redefining Darkness label. Don’t miss Ashen on their national tour this August/September, they are coming armed with a powerful arsenal.
