Haines Signature 460 Rebuild

Haines Signature 460 Rebuild This page was created to show the steps involved in rebuilding a Haines 460. I will try and outline the steps and what is required.

I have no idea in what I am doing with glassing so have had a little help along the way from a few different people.

So the final result.
On the water for the last 3 weeks and what a boat. It had been nearly 20 years since I have owned a Haines or a glass boat and I could not be happier. Ended up putting a 70 on as I did want to wait for the 90. Thanks to the crew Bills Marine for fitting it up and for the information so far.
So to say I am more than happy with the hull is an understatement. Have got a top speed of 30 knots so far and have an economical run of 22kn at 4200rpm and getting 3.2km/l.
Have done 3 inshore trips to some Wonky holes so far in not the best conditions and the Haines took it in its stride.
So where to from here. Possibly a jacking plate and definitely a bigger sounder - the eyes are not what the used to be.
With the extra couple of upgrades I will keep you posted on how it all goes.

So after nearly 12 months of rebuilding the Haines, I finally get to drop of off tomorrow to start the outboard fitout. New 70 Yammie from Bills Marine should push it along.
Fingers crossed to be on the water for Christmas.
So a quick run down on what was done, new stringers, transom and floor. Front and rear casting deck. Centre console, drop in fuel tank, built in esky, new wiring and electrical set up, basically a full rebuild from the hull up. Once the motor is fitted I will give a run down on total hours on the build and also a performance update as well.
Have put a couple of photos of what it starred out like to what it has finished at.
Can't wait to get it on the water.

Progression update.
I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. The rebuild is progressing along and should have the motor fitted before Xmas.
Have completed the fron cast deck, electric mount, well and the esky.
The console is in and the majority of the wiring is done and connected. There is still a few things to tidy up.
Lights and stereo connected, no not in tandem
The seats are installed and functional.
The last bits are the rear of the boat. Sounder and transducers, rear Cast deck, trim tab install and work out where the fuel hose and motor cables will come out and then tidy it all up.
Then it's a matter of fitting the motor and water testing.

The fun has begun. The fit out. This is the tedious part.
Not sure if there is an easy way to do it or not but have started with the front section and moving backwards from there.
The end product is slowly starting to take shape. It is crazy how much time is put into the smallest of jobs and the number of jobs. It is a matter of doing it right the first time and making sure it what is needed.
It may look messy but is is organised Kaos.

It's getting closer and closer. Have the Alloy drop in tank completed by NB Prop works in Cairns done. Have worked out the front and back casting deck heights and also where the centre console will sit as well as the seating. Currently getting fibreglassing done to secure it all.
Once the glassing is done it will be fit out time.

Sorry its been a while. Had a slight injury playing crickey. A Ruptured Distal Bicep tendon. So no lifting, sport or fishing for 9 months 😪😪😪
That has put a slow pace on the rebuild but it has meant that I can work on the hull. Before the injury I had taken the boat of the trailer to get a couple of new cross members replaced and also so maintenance like replacing bearings and changing the winch rope to a synthetic rope.

Also I repaired the marks and scratches on the hull. What started out as a small job soon got to much so I ended up painting 3 coats of flow coat with alot of sanding in between.

The most tedious part was the wet sand to get the right finish going through the range of w&d sand paper from 240 to 400 to 600 to 800 then finally 1200 grit all hand sanded. Once that was done it was cut back and finally polished to get that near perfect finish until the first sand bar. 😄😄

With the boat back on it is time to start working out where the fuel tank and console will go and also the casting decks. The progress may be slower but we will get there.

The reward will be in the finished product.

Its been a while.
Phase 1 complete. The old transom, stringers, and floor removed. Old flowcoat and paint removed and new stringers and transom cutout.
Thanks to Paul at PC Fibreglassing in Ingham for the glasd work to put the stringers, transom and floor in.
Phase 2 keep track as its time to flip the boat and fix the scratches and chips in the Gelcoat on the hull and cross memeber on the trailer. Then work out the casting decks and the fuel tank and console.
The reward will be in the finished product.

The start of phase 2.
Measure and measure and meausre. Transom cut out - 2 x 19mm pieces of Thermolite board.
Stringers cut out as well, also out of 19mm Thermolite.
Taking to the fibreglasser tomorrow to get it all glassed in.
I did say to him that after cutting the stringers that I am no carpenter. 🤣🤣
Once thats is done, i can start on the floor and drop in tank. It is all coming together

PHASE 1 COMPLETE
After 50 hours over 9 weeks, the first part of the rebuild is complete.
The old Casting decks, floor, stringers and transom are all removed. The old paint and glass sanded back and ready for the next phase. Plenty of fibreglass dust and a big learning curve.

Phase 2 - Measure and measure for the new Transom, new stringers and new floor to be cut out. Will be over the next couple of weeks and then the fibreglassing begins.

So its been a few weeks since the last post. Plenty of hours put in and plenty of grinding and cutting. Floor cut out, stringers cut out and ground back and have half of the transom left to take out. Definitely plenty of fibreglass dust when doing it all, one of the photos show just a small amount of dust. Will be worth it in the end. Not long until I can start to put the transom in.

Another week done and dusted. Definitely dusted, dusty and dust everywhere. Busy week and about 24hrs of work put in.
Cut the floor out, cut some of the stringers out, cut the glass off the inside of the transom. It shows just how rotten the transom is and the stringers were. Started grinding the old glass and where the floor and stringers met. Still alot of work ahead

Thanks for having a look at the page. This is my first glass project boat and really do have no idea but with the help of a couple of friends I hope to show you step by step what goes into rebuilding a glass boat.
I will hopefully mention a few businesses and people along the way that have helped to get the finished product on the water.

If you have any questions then send me a message and I will see if I can help.
