Terribly tragic news coming out of Sydney last night. Holly and I are horrified and disgusted by actions like this, and our thoughts are with those affected.

In the coming days, media pundits will rush to explain today’s events—often to score points or sell advertising. Politicians will use the news to push agendas, and foreign voices will no doubt seize the opportunity to advance their own narratives.

Too often, the victims and their families are forgotten while the media machine grinds into motion to serve its paymasters.

I’ll be keeping the victims and their loved ones front of mind, and I hope others can do the same.

Constructive comments or shared grief are welcome. Please refrain from conspiracy theories or attempts to tie this tragedy to political agendas.

Not long after the update on the Family Murders, we also have an update connected to the case from Episode 224.

Greg Lynn — originally convicted of the murder of Carol Clay in March 2020 — has had that conviction set aside. The Court of Appeal has ordered that he face a retrial for the Clay charge only.

The charge relating to Russell Hill will not be retried. This leaves a fair amount of evidence inadmissible, and comes after his alleged violent history with his ex-wife has become common public knowledge.

If you'd like a refresher on the original incident and the years-long investigation that followed, revisit Episode 224 in our feed via linktr.ee/weirdcrapinaustralia.

We'll keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Bevan Spencer von Einem, the man convicted of the 1983 murder of 15-year-old Richard Kelvin and long linked — though never charged — to the broader series of crimes known as the Family Murders, has died in prison at the age of 78.

His death closes the chapter on one of South Australia’s most infamous offenders, but it does not close the book on the Family Murders themselves. Many questions remain unanswered, and several cases connected to the era are still considered unresolved. For the families of victims, von Einem’s passing may bring neither clarity nor closure.

If you’d like to revisit the history, our three-part series — The Family Murders (Episodes 44-46) — breaks down the known facts, the investigative challenges, and why this case continues to cast a long shadow over Adelaide.

For those wanting a deeper understanding of how we got here, the full episodes are available through linktr.ee/weirdcrapinaustralia.

It's Sunday — you know what that means.

Early access to this week’s episode has just dropped on Patreon, and this time we’re diving head-first into Gallipoli (1981), the film Mel Gibson knocked out while waiting for Mad Max 2 to get the thumbs-up. It’s a landmark of Australian cinema: mateship, myth-making, and a gut-punch of an ending that still hits like a runaway horse at full gallop.

If you want to watch along with us, hear the behind-the-scenes stories, and enjoy a proper old-fashioned commentary track, it’s all waiting for you.

Join us on Patreon for early access to this commentary and every one to come. It keeps the lights on, the research flowing, and the yarn-spinning spirit alive.

No modern Australian knows the full name of Australia's first Astronaught: Mr Jolly Squiggles, but we do. He was the upside-down man who brought imagination to life — with nothing more than a pencil for a nose and a blackboard for a stage. Mr Squiggle, the beloved children’s television icon, captured the hearts of generations with his wobbly lines, friendly charm, and boundless creativity.

Travel back to the earliest age of Australian TV to explore how Norman Hetherington’s quirky puppet became a national treasure. From his humble beginnings on ABC in 1959 to the stories the hosts' own mothers told them about the show, Mr. Jolly Squiggles (Simplified to Mr. Squiggle in later years) wasn’t just a puppet — he was a teacher, an artist, and a friend to millions.

Join Holly & Matthew as they uncover the legacy of Mr Squiggle and Friends, the artistry behind his creation, and the enduring magic of a character who taught Australia that a few squiggles and a bit of imagination could turn into anything at all.

Weird Crap in Australia episode 384 is now available on all good podcasting platforms! Head to linktr.ee/weirdcrapinaustralia for platforms and merch!

Spooktober Day 18 – Horror Double Feature

🎥 From Beyond
There’s something special about Jeffrey Combs and his sporadic horror appearances.
His Lovecraftian tales hold a unique space thanks to their blend of body horror, madness, and cosmic dread.
Sadly, like most Lovecraft adaptations, this one doesn’t quite live up to the source — but it’s still a wild, gooey, neon nightmare worth your time.

🧟‍♂️ Return of the Living Dead
This is the zombie film equivalent of Gremlins.
That’s it. That’s the review.

Ladies and gentlemen of the Weird Crap in Australia family, I would like to introduce you to our newest hire.

Harleen (Harley when she's not in trouble, Mayhem when she is) is our new YouTube Video Coordinator (as you can see, she's already hard at work).

Harley is 12 weeks old, tiny enough to pick up in one hand, and already squeaking like a chew toy - she will grow to be a very vocal member of the team, we can tell.

Now that we've fulfilled the open role, our YouTube Channel will go live with our first video on Oct 23, so head over and subscribe to be notified!
