To help honour Gemma Carey’s memory on her birthday (R.I.P.), we are pleased to share her memoir piece: “slow violence, a weird delirium”, from Lost Souls Magazine Issue 01. Carey wrote about the 'weird' experience of learning how to read and write again after vaccine induced COVID. Carey was also a founding member of the magazine. With artwork by Nic Carey. The piece is our first print story published online.

We'd like to congratulate all winners, such a wonderful collection of books, stories and illustrations! And again, we'd like to acknowledge for being nominated for "Bottom Feeders" in our second issue. But, we'd also like to celebrate LS contributor Ron Schroer for them winning BEST HORROR NOVELLA, “Walpurgis” (Thorncroft Legacy). Congrats Ron! A huge thank you to our mesmerising performers and lovely audience at last night’s “The Horror Of Care: Readings and Music” Gang Gang Cafe ! The evening was full of dark yet beautiful storytelling about the loss, pain, new beginnings and transformations possible from looking after others. And the compelling, nuanced stories that come from writing about “truth”, even when it’s difficult. Our host Fionn MacPherson was lovely and inspiring too, as much a part of the macabre act as everyone else! We are stunned and excited to learn that Fionn MacPherson’s excellent short story, “Bottom Feeders”, was shortlisted for Best Horror Story in the Aurealis Awards ! A huge congrats to Fionn! We were honoured to publish their first short story in Lost Souls Issue 02. It is also an indication of the supremely talented folks at the Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild, and what is possible through collaboration.
