Practice beats panic… on the ice and at home. 🧊🌱

Meet Aliesha Embleton: step-mum, tragic, and founder of Sapling Minds. In our latest People with Purpose, she shares how quiet, early skills change everything, naming feelings (not kids), tiny rituals that stick, and the power of repair. We talk invisible impact, joy as a method, and the courage to take the leap when you feel the pull.

Last week, a Canberra teen told her mum a video of her was “going around.” It looked real. It wasn’t. That is the new reality: AI can fabricate faces, voices and chats that feel true enough to hurt.

But I didn’t know… how fast this moved, how common it’s becoming, and how much our kids need us to talk about it early, without shame.

“Being tricked by AI is not a failure. It’s a feature of the tech.”

So what do need to know? Read our latest article:

Deepfakes, grooming and consent, what Canberra families and schools can do now. Last week, a Canberra teen told her mum a video of her was “going around.” It looked real. It wasn’t. That is the new reality: AI can fabricate faces, voices and chats that feel true enough to hurt. But I didn’t ...

Wait what?

Alicia is 33, a new mum, and on paper, “indefatigable.” Her early signs didn’t look cinematic: a stubborn cough, a fading voice, a tiredness that didn’t make sense. In this candid, behind-the-scenes conversation, Alicia shares how she kept notes, asked clear questions, and partnered with her clinicians to reach a hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis, reminding us that self-advocacy isn’t defiance, it’s good care done together.

When you picture cancer, you might imagine dramatic hospital scenes, visible weight loss, and a sudden, unmistakable decline. Alicia’s story is nothing like that. It looked like a young mum returning to work, juggling nap schedules, and clearing her throat between meetings. It looked ordinary. Until it wasn’t.

“Cancer doesn’t always look like the movies.”

For Alicia, it looked like a cough she kept apologising for, a fading voice, and a tiredness that didn’t make sense. Her story is a masterclass in self-advocacy as partnership: a one-page brief, clear questions, and the courage to ask, “What else could this be?”

Filling up your good news feed! 📰

Kids who usually play barefoot on a cracked concrete court with rusted hoops will arrive at the Broome Drop-in Centre to find it transformed. There will be fresh lines, brand new rings, and a shaded grandstand named in honour of beloved Aboriginal leader Mark Manado.

And then, there will be Cal, or ‘Cap’, as thousands across Australia know him, ready to run a free three-day basketball clinic and community tournament. But as Cal says, it’s never just about basketball.

This July, something powerful is happening in Broome led by Canberra’s Cal Bruton OAM. Kids who usually play barefoot on a cracked concrete court with rusted hoops will arrive at the Broome Drop-in Centre to find it transformed. There will be fresh lines, brand new rings, and a shaded grandstand n
