You could drive past it without ever knowing what happened here.

On 13 August 1940, a Lockheed Hudson bomber crashed near Canberra, killing all 10 people on board, including senior Australian government and military figures travelling to a wartime meeting.

Today, the site sits quietly among the pines near Fairbairn.

There’s a walking trail, a simple memorial, an abandoned paintball field, military warning signs and a landscape that feels like nature is slowly reclaiming it all.

It’s eerie. Beautiful. A little neglected.

And it carries a remarkable piece of Canberra and Australian history.

We walked the Canberra Air Disaster Memorial Trail and explored the story behind it, including why this tragedy mattered far beyond the crash site itself.

Not all big ideas start in a boardroom. Monisha Sami's started with a children's book about an Australian Shepherd named Kai going on an adventure in a yellow submarine.

That playful beginning eventually grew into StoryCloud, an early years learning app addressing one of early childhood education's most persistent challenges: the digital divide. Some children arrive at learning with safe, structured digital tools around them. Others don't. Monisha has spent her career as a criminologist noticing exactly that kind of gap, and decided to build something to close it.

Her story is one of quiet persistence, genuine care, and what it looks like to build something meaningful from the inside out.
