I'm 31. You can call me Sloane. My husband, Beckett (33), and I had been married for four years. We were expecting our first baby β a boy we named Rowan. I thought our relationship was strong. I was mistaken.
The week leading up to my due date, Beckett started acting strangely. He was smiling at his phone and claiming everything was "handled." I tried to brush off the uneasy feeling in my stomach.
On Friday morning, the contractions began β real ones. I grabbed the counter and said, "I think this is it."
He glanced at his watch.
"Are you sure itβs not Braxton Hicks?"
I was sweating and trembling. Then he returned with a duffel bag.
"I HAVE TO LEAVE," he said. "GUYS TRIP. PLANNED FOR MONTHS."
I looked at him in disbelief. "I'm in labor."
He shrugged. "THE DEPOSITβS NON-REFUNDABLE. MY MOM CAN TAKE YOU."
Something within me broke.
I called my best friend Maris as another contraction surged through me. Beckett kissed my forehead as if it were just a quick task and walked out.
Maris hurried me to the hospital. I was already six centimeters dilated. Everything intensified β alarms, rapid voices, discussions about an emergency C-section. I kept wondering, "Where is my husband?"
Rowan arrived an hour later. Alive. Crying. Perfect.
I was cradling my newborn when my phone buzzed.
That was when he crossed the line. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't engage in an argument.
That evening, Beckett called me, PANICKING.
The consequences weren't about revenge. They were the truth β IMMEDIATE, loud, and final.
