Navigating the aged care system… where do you even begin? 😵💫
If you’ve ever tried to help your aging parents or loved ones access support, you’ll know how overwhelming it can be… and just how bloody emotional it feels when you realise the roles have quietly reversed. The people who once held you up now need your steady hand - and that shift can stir up so much more than we expect. 😔There have been quiet tears behind closed doors… moments where the weight of it all hits you out of nowhere. There’s been heartache - the kind that catches in your throat - and the strength to hold it together when all you really want to do is fall apart. And somehow, in the middle of it all… there’s been laughter too - the kind that reminds you love is still here, even in the hardest moments. 😀
So, about a year ago, I thought we were on the path with My Aged Care - but it turned out we were only accessing the Commonwealth Home Support Program. Forms, assessments, waiting lists, so many different areas … it’s enough to make your head spin. 😣 Fast forward to now, and we've just had our official assessment for the Home Care Package through My Aged Care. 🙌
Honestly, I expected roadblocks and frustration, but I have to say - we’ve been incredibly lucky. Every single person we’ve dealt with has been kind, patient, and genuinely caring. 🙏
From the first call on Friday to the assessment on Wednesday of the next week, everything happened fast. And instead of a 12-month wait like we’d feared, we’re told it may only be a few months. That’s a blessing in itself. ❤️
Yes, there have been a few hiccups and head-shaking moments. But overall, I’m just so grateful.
Grateful that my parents - who have worked hard their whole lives, paid their taxes, and never asked for much - are now going to receive the support they deserve to stay in their home and retain their independence. 💗
I know not everyone is as fortunate to have help navigating these systems.
At their age, it can be confusing and daunting and all too hard to even try to do themselves.
But we've had the kindness of our local doctor, who took the time to really "see" them and support them and myself. And Nurse Karen, whose wisdom and compassion helped guide them gently into this next chapter. 🌱
We may live in a small country town, but the hearts of the majority of our healthcare workers are anything but small. They’ve shown us what true care looks like - not just ticking boxes, but truly walking beside their patients.
To anyone who’s been putting this off… please don’t.
It might feel scary, but I promise it’s not as hard as it seems.
And your loved ones are worth it. 💕
Sometimes love looks like paperwork.
Sometimes it looks like guidance.
Sometimes love looks like quietly showing up - with respect, care, and integrity - as your parents begin this next phase of their journey. 🩷
If you are on this journey with your loved ones and ever want someone to talk to, I am here. 🩷 Cindy
