Claire Taubert It is no secret that as we grow older, our physical health and capacity change—and in some cases decline. Interestingly, our mental health often improves. Measures of contentedness, happiness and well-being increase over the lifespan, despite a decrease in physical ability for some. Sociological research shows that older people generally feel happier and more contented. We also tend to face stress with more equanimity than when we were younger....

Tanya Loos I am driving a rental car at the moment while my Corolla is at the smash repairs in Castlemaine. Unfortunately they know me well - this is the fourth time they have replaced the front part of my car due to "road strike", "wildlife collision", "car strike" – this phenomenon has many names. Despite driving carefully and under the speed limit, each time it has seemed as if a kangaroo has come out of nowhere and collided with my little car!...

Hobsons Bay City Council has released a confronting report detailing serious cultural and organisational issues following an independent Listening and Support Process involving 138 staff. The review was triggered after allegations raised with councillors led to the suspension of Hobsons Bay CEO, Aaron van Egmond. Mr van Egmond later resigned his position with the Council. The review, led by experienced local government executives Brett Luxford and Jewil Fulton, found that many staff experienced a workplace culture marked by distrust, fear, bullying, and systemic dysfunction over several years....

Lesley Hewitt It’s NAIDOC week (6th-13 July 2025) when we celebrate and recognize the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people – and coincidently the same week that the Northern Territory coroner, Elizabeth Armitage reported that she couldn’t rule out that racism contributed to Kumanjayi Walker’s death. So, it was fortuitous that I picked up a copy of Keon West’s book…...

Patrice O'Shea It is easy to say that a person’s contribution to an organisation is immeasurable. In many ways, Ray Robinson’s was. But in other ways, it could be measured pretty accurately. Ray joined the Friends in the big year of 2011. Stuart Rattle had shaken the whole organisation up and we were heading to the first big Musk Farm opening....

Our justice system has been very much to the fore in recent weeks, with one case in particular taking up far too much space in our media. But media reports of court proceedings have been with us since newspapers began such as this report from The Daylesford Mercury and Express on Tuesday 31 August 1869: In the Police Court yesterday before Mr Webster P.M., that well-known character McGrath was charged with being drunk....

Once upon a time, a weary traveller arrived in a small village carrying nothing but an empty pot and a smooth stone in his pocket. The village, having fallen on hard times, was quiet and cautious. People kept to themselves, convinced they had nothing to spare. The traveller sat in the middle of the town square, built a small fire, filled his pot with water, and dropped in the stone....
