Hepburn Shire Council’s decision to spend up to $8,000 on a strongly worded letter opposing a Dan Murphy’s store in Daylesford has ignited controversy, with critics questioning the council’s financial priorities.
This latest expenditure follows a staggering $148,000 already spent on a barrister to fight the application since 2023, raising eyebrows over the council’s handling of ratepayers’ funds.
The Shire, which has opposed the store at 63 Central Springs Road from the outset, now faces scrutiny as it proposes a 10% rate increase next financial year to address a $4 million annual shortfall over the next decade.
The Liquor Licensing Commission rejected the store in 2024 over underage drinking concerns, but the Endeavour Group’s appeal to VCAT has prompted the council’s latest move.
Adding to the controversy, Councillor Lesley Hewitt exited the meeting due to a conflict of interest, while Councillor Tim Drylie opposed the letter, advocating for a council officer to attend the hearing instead.
With ratepayers footing the bill for both the letter and the council’s hefty legal fees, questions linger about whether the Shire is truly prioritising fiscal responsibility.
